The 141st Haskell Invitational field is beginning to take shape for the $1 million Grade 1 at 1 1/8 miles.
Big Brown, working well for his comeback race at Monmouth Park since being eased in the Belmont Stakes, is among 33 nominees that include several likely challengers that didn’t perform well in Triple Crown races.
Big Brown has steadily improved while breezing in the mornings at Aqueduct. On Sunday, the son of Boundary went five furlongs in 59 1/5 - his fourth work since June 9 when he finished ninth and last in the Belmont.

Pyro, one of the horses racing in the $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes on Sunday, July 19, worked 4 furlongs on the muddy Oklahoma Track at Saratoga with exercise rider Carlos Rosas in 50.56.
After victories in the Risen Star stakes and Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds, Pyro finished 10th in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland and 8th in the Kentucky Derby. Since then, Pyro has won the Northern Dancer Stakes at Churchill Downs Jue 14. Last year at Monmouth Park, Pyro finished second to War Pass in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
The 1 1/8- mile Jim Dandy Stakes is headed by Belmont Stakes winner Da’ Tara.

Favorites have performed splendidly in the Haskell Invitational, winning 10 of the past 14 years in Monmouth Park’s premier stakes. Six consecutive favorites scored starting in 1994 when Holy Bull returned the lowest win payoff — $2.40.
In all 18 post time choices haven’t disappointed in the 40 races. Big Brown likely will be the odds-on choice in the $1 million event on Aug. 3 at 1 1/8 miles.
“The Haskell is a race (at) a racetrack that I think is more suitable to him, a distance that I now feel comfortable with and it allows us, more importantly, to get another race in between the Breeders’ Cup,” co-owner Michael Iavarone told Associated Press Saturday.

Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) has reached an agreement with the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority (KHRA) regarding procedures followed for assigning assistant starters during Kentucky Derby 134 on Saturday, May 3, 2008. Churchill Downs has agreed to pay an administrative assessment of $15,000, but does not admit any wrongdoing as part of the agreement.
The review of Churchill Downs procedures followed the assignment of an assistant starter, Clinton Beck, to a specific horse for Kentucky Derby 134, Pyro, who finished 8th in the Run for the Roses. As part of the review, the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority determined there was no evidence of inappropriate behavior by the assistant starter during the loading.

Last year’s Blue Grass Stakes was the most exciting in years when a nose and two heads separated the top four finishers. However, it was the 57th slowest of 83 races: 1:51 1/5 for the 1 1/8 miles.
Dominican edged 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense for his third straight triumph on synthetic surfaces. Zanjero ran third and Teuflesberg finished fourth.
But Street Sense got revenge on the first Saturday in May when he roared to victory from far back. Domincan ended up a disappointing 11th after the 1 1/4 miles. Zanjero was 13th and Teuflesberg ran 17th in the 20-horse field.
None of the three main contenders in Saturday’s $750,000 Blue Grass Stakes headliner at Keeneland have run on synthetic surfaces, but all captured their last stakes. The likely favorite is Pyro, who goes for three straight this year after impressive victories in the Risen Star and Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds.
The son of Pulpit looked cool and calm during schooling on April 5 at Keeneland where he galloped 1 1/2 miles over the Polytrack. On Monday, he breezed four furlongs in 50 3/5.
