Here’s the 25th Breeders’ Cup 2008 in a nutshell.
$1 Million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, 7 furlongs: There are two horses to beat, both 3-year-old fillies. Indian Blessing, the early 2-1 choice is 2 for 2 at the distance, with a victory over the old Santa Anita Park Cushion Track. Zaftig won twice at the distance on dirt, beating Indian Blessing at a mile. Indyanne or Intangaroo can round out the trifecta off their synthetic surface form.
$2 Million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, 1 1/8 miles: Favorites dominate, as 17 of 24 winners were less than 3-1, which probably accounts for the small fields. Zenyatta, morning line 3-5 favorite, is undefeated in eight races that include seven on synthetic surfaces. I like her to defeat seven challengers. Longshot Carriage at 8-1, who won twice on Polytrack, is worth including in exotics.
$5 Million Breeders’ Cup Classic, 1 1/4 miles: Only four horses scored from posts 1-3, including Ghostzapper on the rail in ‘04 who was only the second wire-to-wire winner since ‘91 when Black Tie Affair triumphed off the longest layoff…
Race horse trainer Steve Asmussen announced Tuesday that the Louisiana Derby winner, Pyro, will be one of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile entries and will not run in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Pyro was one of the 3 Breeders’ Cup contenders of Steve Asmussen pre-entered for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, including defending Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Curlin and Student Council.
The 2008 Breeders’ Cup will be run for 2 days from October 24-25 at Santa Anita Park. Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile post time is 11:30 am while the Breeders’ Cup Classic post time is 3:45 pm Pacific.

Ten of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races could have full fields as a record 180 thoroughbreds were pre-entered for the two-day program at Santa Anita Park.
That’s good news for horseplayers because the larger the fields, the better the payoffs, Historically, exotic wagers produced big bucks during the 24-year history of America’s premier horse racing day.
Fields this year might average 12.78 compared to 11.69 at Monmouth Park in 2007 when 122 horses were pre-entered in 11 Breeders’ Cup contests. That doesn’t count horses entered in two races in case they don’t get realize their first choice.

Race horse trainer Eoin Harty said he never lost confidence in his horse. “Even with the trip he had in the Kentucky Derby I don’t know if we would have beaten Big Brown that day. I’d certainly like to take him on again; maybe in the Breeders’ Cup.”

The 139th Travers Stakes could boast double-digit runners for the first time in 15 years since 1993 Kentucky Derby champ Sea Hero roared from back of the pack to defeat 10 challengers.
There could be that many 3-year-olds in the $1 million contest on Aug. 23. Winners of Triple Crown races the past 15 years have done well, winning seven times, including four that scored in the Belmont Stakes.
That’s a good omen for Belmont winner Da’ Tara, hoping to rebound from a disappointing seventh place finish in the Jim Dandy on July 27. He broke inward, went to the lead, dueled along the rail until the far turn and steadily faded to last, ending up 24 1/4 lengths behind Macho Again after 1 1/8 miles.
While Da’ Tara was capturing the Belmont, odds-on favorite Big Brown ended up ninth and last. However, he took the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth on Aug. 3 and will go into another race en route to the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
West Point Thoroughbreds’ Macho Again, ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux, won the $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. II) at Saratoga on Sunday, July 27.
Trained by Dallas Stewart, Macho Again covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.16 and paid $18.40, $5.30 and $3.40. Half a length behind, Pyro, under jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, returned $3.40 and $2.90. Tiz Now Tiz Then with jockey Miguel Mena paid $4.70 to show.
The Macho Uno colt, Macho Again, will now point for the meet’s biggest race, the 139th running of the $1 million Travers Stakes (gr. I) on Saturday, August 23. The last three Jim Dandy Stakes winners — Street Sense (2007), Bernardini (2006) and Flower Alley (2005) — went on to become Travers Stakes winners.
