Street Sense Heavy Favorite for Blue Grass Stakes
Street Sense was voted heavy favorite for Saturday’s Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland Race Track, ths will be his final prep race before the Kentucky Derby day on May 5.
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner was made the 4-5 favorite Wednesday for the 1 1/8-mile Blue Grass, which will be run over Polytrack for the first time. Great Hunter, who defeated Street Sense over Keeneland’s synthetic surface last year in the Breeders’ Futurity, was the second favored at 9-5.
Trainer Carl Nafzger said Polytrack was a factor in his decision to use Keeneland as Street Sense’s final prep before the Derby at Churchill Downs.
“I just thought if we’re going to make the Derby, we’re going to make it in style, we can’t be in a situation worrying about weather,” Nafzger said. “We can’t worry about a hard track, a deep track.”
Street Sense won the Tampa Bay Derby over dirt in his 3-year-old debut last month.
The last Blue Grass Stakes winner to go on and take the Derby was Strike the Gold in 1991.
