Lava Man Leads $1 million Pacific Classic Contenders at Del Mar

Defending champion Lava Man leads a field of 13 in the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar Race Track set to run this weekend. It would be the second-largest field in the event’s 17-year history.

Fourteen horses ran in 2002, when Carry Home became the third 3-year-old to win.

Lava Man is fresh from his victory in the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup. His runner-up A.P. Xcellent, third-place finisher Big Booster and fourth-place Porfido will all take on Lava Man again.

Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel will have two starters with Porfido and Hello Sunday. He has won the Pacific Classic seven times. While trainer Mike Mitchell will saddle Big Booster and Sun Boat in seeking his first Pacific Classic victory.

Santa Anita Derby winner Tiago, Albertus Maximum and Time Squared are the lone 3-year-olds in the race. Other horses entered were Arson Squad, Awesome Gem, Salty Humor and Student Council.
