Any Given Saturday Wins Haskell Invitational
Any Given Saturday raced past favorites Curlin and Hard Spun for an impressive victory in the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Sunday. The victory gave high hopes to trainer Todd Pletcher who is gearing the colt for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
“The way he ran today, the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Monmouth is our goal,” Pletcher said. “We’ll work out his schedule to get to the Breeders’ Cup. Right now we’re going to enjoy this one. We’ll see how he comes out of it and go from there.”
Pletcher also registered his second straight Haskell win after Bluegrass Cat won last year. Preakness winner Curlin was installed as 4-5 favoritebut and finished third.
“We’re going to have to figure out why he ran third,” said Steve Asmussen, the trainer for Curlin. “He ran the worst race of his career and we’ll have to find out why.”
Hard Spun, who took the lead at the top of the stretch, finished a nose in front of Curlin for second. On the Triple Crown trail, Hard Spun was second in the Kentucky Derby, third in the Preakness and fourth at the Belmont.
Any Given Saturday, who was fresh off an impressive win in the Dwyer Stakes on July 4, could next be pointed to the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on August 25.
