Scat Daddy Takes Saratoga Sanford Stakes

Favorite Scat Daddy blasted to the front with a late run and beat Teuflesberg by a neck Thursday to give trainer Todd Pletcher his third career victory in the $150,000 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.

It was the second stakes win in a row at the Spa for Pletcher, Saratoga’s leading trainer for the past four years.

Cotton Blossom
won Wednesday’s Schuylerville Stakes for the 39-year-old Texan. Scat Daddy found running room in third along the backstretch, settled in good position while stalking the leaders around the turn then closed the gap with a late run to take the first stakes win of his career for owner James T. Scatuorchio.

The 2-year-old colt will be pointed toward the $250,000 Hopeful stakes on Sept. 4, Pletcher said.

Ridden by John Velazquez, the bay son of Johannesburg covered six furlongs in 1:11.18 over a fast track, paying $2.60, $2.10 and $2.10. Velazquez, who set a Saratoga record with 65 winners in 2004, was aboard Cotton Blossom for Wednesday’s opening day stakes win.
