Edenwold Captures The Queen’s Plate at Woodbine
Edenwold, ridden by Emile Ramsammy, rolled into victory at Sunday’s $1 million Queen’s Plate at Woodbine Racecourse. The 1 1/4 mile Queen’s Plate is the first race in Canada’s Triple Crown.
Voted champion two-year-old in Canada last year, Edenwold recorded his first victory of 2006 by winning Canada’s most important race. The win also made history with trainer Josie Carroll becoming the first female conditioner to win the Queen’s Plate.
A field of 13 Canadaian-bred three-year-olds participated but breaking sharply from the gate was Edenwold and Sterwins. Sterwins took the lead the first time under the wire. Entering the clubhouse turn, Sterwins held a short lead over the favorite Wanna Runner and Edenwold.
Sterwins, under jockey John Velazquez, maintained a lead up the backstretch followed by Malakoff, Wanna Runner and Edenwold. Around the turn for home Edenwold and Sterwins were on even terms.
The two leaders battled down the stretch. Edenwold took a short lead in mid- stretch and went on to post a one-length victory over Sterwins. Malakoff, the second choice in the morning line was third.
The time for the 147th Queen’s Plate was 2:05.30.
The Canadian Triple Crown will continue on Sunday, July 16 with the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes on at Fort Erie Race Track. The final race is the $500,000 Breeders’ Stakes back at Woodbine, August 6.
