Belmont Stakes Winner Jazil Will Skip Breeders Cup
Belmont Stakes winner Jazil won’t be running in the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on Nov. 4, his handlers are now looking at the Dubai World Cup next year.
Jazil is newly recovered from a bruised bone injury in his right hind leg and only recently returned to training.
“He’s galloping every day, doing great and we hope to work him in the near future,” trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said.
MacLaughlin, though, added that the Breeders Cup Classic is too close for Jazil’s next start.
Jazil, owned by Dubai’s Sheik Hamdan‘s Shadwell Stable, finished fourth in the Preakness before winning the Belmont on June 10 in his last race. After injuring his right cannon bone in mid-July, Jazil missed the Travers Stakes.
Invasor also is owned by Shadwell Stable, was pulled out of the Jockey Gold Cup at Belmont due to a slight fever. Without him in the Gold Cup, Preakness and Travers winner Bernardini is set to become the overwhelming favorite.
Other possible contenders for the BC Classic race are Irish Derby winner Dylan Thomas, Andromeda’s Hero, Spanish Chestnut and Sun King.
