Tampa Bay Derby winner, Street Sense, takes the $2 million Kentucky Derby 133 at Churchill Downs Saturday. The Carl Nafzger-trained champion gears up for the Preakness Stakes on May 19 in his quest to finally end the Triple Crown drought.
Nafzger was initially resistant to let Street Sense run at Pimlico, but he briefly let his mind wander to a possible sweep of the Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. “As soon as we win the Preakness, we’ll go to the Belmont,” he said, smiling.

Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II) winner, Slew’s Tizzy, will skip the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) on May 5 at Churchill Downs and instead will begin preparation for the second Triple Crown jewel, Preakness Stakes, according to trainer Greg Fox.
“We decided to skip the Derby, we’ll give him the four weeks between races and run him back in the Preakness (gr.I),†said Fox, who trains the son of Tiznow for owner Joseph LaCombe.

The 2006 Kentucky Derby winner, Barbaro’s fight for survival ended Monday when the champion horse was euthanized after complications from his tragic accident at last year’s Preakness, ending an eight-month ordeal.
“I really didn’t think it was appropriate to continue treatment because the probability of getting better was so poor,” said Dr. Dean Richardson, chief of surgery at the New Bolton Center.
Richardson, fighting back tears, added: “Barbaro had many, many good days.”

It’s time to pull horse racing out of the slop. As 2006 mercilessly shuts down, the nation’s leading trainers have been suspended and several jockeys banned.

In honor of the 2006 Kentucky Derby winner, the Maryland Jockey Club has changed the name of the Sir Barton Stakes to Barbaro Stakes, the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds will debut in May 2007 at the Pimlico Race Course as one of eight added money races on the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) undercard.
Barbaro is still recovering from a shattered hind leg sustained during the Preakness Stakes and remains in intensive care at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s New Bolton Center.

On Saturday’s Jim Dandy Stakes, 3-year-old colt Bernardini makes his first start since winning the May 20 Preakness Stakes, a race everyone remembers as the one in which Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro shattered his right hind leg in the opening strides.
Bernardini went on to win the Preakness with an impressive performance that was all but forgotten in the wake of Barbaro’s fight for survival, which continues at the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa.”

(AP) — He still looks every bit the champion. Only the fiberglass casts on not one but both of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro’s hind legs are indicators of something terribly wrong.
“His ears are up, he’s bright, he’s looking around,” Dr. Dean Richardson said Thursday. “If you look at this horse, it’d be hard to put him down.”

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro survived a 7-hour-surgery Sunday fighting for his life after breaking his right rear leg in three places at the Preakness Stakes.
At this moment “he is extremely comfortable in the leg,” said Dr. Dean Richardson. The colt’s surgeon declared he’s never worked on so many catastrophic injuries to one horse.

Undefeated and heavy favorite horse, Barbaro, was pulled out of the race after suffering injury. His absence allowed Bernardini to take the 132nd Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on Saturday.
After his Preakness win, the colt is not definitely set for the Belmont Stakes in three weeks, but trainer Tom Albertrani expects a decision in a few days.
Albertrani, has another Belmont starter in Deputy Glitters, who finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby and skipped the Preakness.
