Maryland’s chief executive and several friends visited Saratoga in 1868 several years after America’s oldest track opened. Gov. Oden Bowie and other prominent horse racing figures attended a dinner party where they pledged to build a track in their state if a special race for 3-year-old colts and fillies was run in two years.
In 1870, the Dinner Party Stakes was launched at Pimlico. Three years later, a new race was introduced for sophomore colts and geldings honoring the inaugural Dinner Stakes winner — Preakness.

Race horse trainer Bennie “Chip” Woolley Jr. said that Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird will run in the $1-million Preakness Stakes 2009 at historic Pimlico Race Course on May 16. The Preakness field is limited to 14. Fourteen of the last 17 years have seen double-digit Preakness entries.

Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown’s trainer Richard Dutrow, Jr. had some words for Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado during the Preakness.

“It looked like he was just trying to keep our horse in the box,” horse trainer Richard Dutrow said. “It didn’t look like he was out to get the best finish out of his horse.”
