Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown’s trainer Richard Dutrow, Jr. had some words for Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado during the Preakness.
Asked on Wednesday to elaborate on comments made after Big Brown’s win Saturday, horse trainer Richard Dutrow suggested that jockey Edgar Prado, on long shot Riley Tucker, needlessly tried to block Big Brown, who heads into the Belmont Stakes with a shot at the Triple Crown.
Jockey Edgar Prado claims he did nothing inappropriate.
“It looked like he was just trying to keep our horse in the box,” horse trainer Richard Dutrow said. “It didn’t look like he was out to get the best finish out of his horse.”

Big Brown was installed as the heavy odds-on early favorite in the 133rd Preakness that attracted a surprising number of challengers — 12.
The last 13-horse fields came during the past decade and both winners of the Kentucky Derby prevailed: War Emblem in ‘02 and Charismatic in ‘99.
Ironically, they posted slower speed figures than in Louisville. Four other Kentucky Derby winners stepped up in Baltimore and their speed figures climbed.
Big Brown, 1-2, will break from post 7, which has produced five winners in the past 19 years. He’s 13 slots closer toward the rail than he was in the Derby. The son of Boundary and Gayego are the only two from this year’s Run for the Roses.
It’s the sixth time since Derby horses began running in the Preakness 90 years ago that two starters at Churchill Downs raced at Pimlico. The last year was ‘80 when Codex beat the Derby-winning filly Genuine Risk by 4 3/4 lengths.

Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown will break from post no. 7 as the 1-2 morning line favorite in the $1-million Preakness Stakes 133 May 17 at Pimlico Race Course.
Raced at 1 3/16 miles, the 2008 Preakness Stakes attracted 12 three-year-old horses hoping to derail Big Brown’s Triple Crown aspirations. A Preakness victory for Big Brown could set up a Triple Crown try three weeks later in the 2008 Belmont Stakes.

Fifth place Kentucky Derby finisher Recapturetheglory will miss the 2008 Preakness Stakes due to a fever, co-owner Ronnie Lamarque announced.
With Recapturetheglory’s defection, it appears none of the 19 Kentucky Derby horses who lost to Big Brown will compete in the Preakness next Saturday. The last time that occurred was 60 years ago with Citation.

The field for next Saturday’s 2008 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico grew to 13 on Friday with Hey Byrn and Icabad Crane joining the Preakness contenders list hoping to derail Big Brown’s Triple Crown aspirations.
Confirmed Preakness horses are: Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown, Recapturetheglory (5th in Kentucky Derby), Behindatthebar, Giant Moon, Hey Byrn, Icabad Crane, Kentucky Bear, Racecar Rhapsody, Riley Tucker, Stevil, Tres Borrachos and Yankee Bravo. Harlem Rocker remained a possible Preakness starter.
Hey Byrn comes into the 1 3/16 mile Preakness Stakes off a victory in the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Hey Byrn did not have enough graded stakes earnings to make the Kentucky Derby field.
Icabad Crane won the Frederico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico on April 19.
In the Kentucky Derby, Big Brown ran away from 19 rivals. A Preakness win would set up a Triple Crown attempt at the 2008 Belmont Stakes on June 7.

Can you recall the last Preakness that lacked a single runner from the Kentucky Derby to challenge the winner in the second leg of the Triple Crown?
Better ask your grandpa because I was 13 when my favorite horse romped in a wire-to-wire victory by 5 1/2 lengths at Pimlico. Citation, en route to the 1948 Triple Crown, defeated his Calumet Farm stablemate by 3 1/2 lengths.
After chasing pacesetting Coaltown six lengths back after a half-mile, Citation vaulted to the lead with ease. In the Preakness, Big Cy went wire to wire and scored with ease by 5 1/2 lengths with nary another Kentucky Derby runner in the field.

El Gato Malo, will not run in the Preakness but instead will opt for Saturday’s Lone Star Derby (gr. III) at Lone Star Park.
The post position draw for the Preakness is Wednesday, May 14 at 5 pm. The 133rd running of the Preakness Stakes is on May 17 and Preakness post time is 6:15 pm.

Big Brown could become the first Kentucky Derby winner since Citation 60 years ago not to face any of the horses who ran against him in the “Run For The Roses”. When he comes to Pimlico Race Course for the May 17 $1 million Preakness Stakes, the middle jewel of racing’s Triple Crown, Big Brown is likely to compete against eight new shooters.
The only Kentucky Derby finisher that might return to challenge the winner is Recapturetheglory, who finished 5th Saturday. Co-owners Louie Roussel and Ronnie Lamarque told Pimlico stakes coordinator Coleman Blind that a final decision could be made tomorrow. The son of Cherokee Run will remain at Churchill Downs until the verdict.
Big Brown’s likely challengers in the Preakness include Lexington Stakes winner Behindatthebar, trained by Todd Pletcher, and San Rafael winner El Gato Malo.
Horse trainer Nick Zito plans to send Stevil, fourth in the Blue Grass. He’ll be joined by Kentucky Bear, third in the Blue Grass; Count Fleet winner Giant Moon; Withers winner Harlem Rocker; California Derby winner Yankee Bravo; and Tres Borrachos, third in the Arkansas Derby.
