Online Horse BettingStonestreet Stables and Harold McCormick’s filly Rachel Alexandra, ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, won Saturday’s 134th running of the $1-million Preakness Stakes 2009, second jewel of the Triple Crown, at Pimlico Race Course May 16.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Rachel Alexandra covered 1 3/16 miles in 1:55.08 and paid $5.60, $4.60 and $3.60. Mine That Bird, under jockey Mike Smith, placed second and returned $6.60 and $4.80. Musket Man with jockey Eibar Coa aboard came in third and paid $5 to show.

With Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird denied of taking the Preakness Stakes, horse racing fans will not see a Triple Crown winner this year at the Belmont Stakes 2009. View the Preakness results & payouts.

The Preakness Stakes Field: I Call ‘em the Way I See ‘em

SBG Global RacebookBy GREG MELIKOV

The 134th Preakness Stakes 2009 features 13 horses going 1 3/16 miles on Saturday. I’m classifying them in several categories from those 3-year-olds that stand little chance to those Preakness horses that wouldn’t surprise.

Pioneerof the Nile: The early 5-1 third choice answered one question in his dirt debut by finishing second in the Kentucky Derby

Kentucky Oaks Winner Rachel Alexandra Entered To The Preakness Stakes 2009

SBG Global RacebookKentucky Oaks winner Rachel Alexandra is among 13 race horses entered for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes field.

Filly Rachel Alexandra was entered Wednesday to run against the boys in the Preakness, along with 50-1 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and Kentucky Derby runner-up Pioneerof the Nile.

Rachel Alexandra’s new owners paid a $100,000 supplemental fee to get her in the Preakness Stakes because she wasn’t nominated to any of the Triple Crown races. The expectation was that she would compete only against her own gender.

A Little Lady Takes on the Big Boys in Preakness

SBG Global RacebookBy GREG MELIKOV

They’ll be a new player in Baltimore for the 134th Preakness Stakes. She’s the likely favorite — Rachel Alexandra.

All that’s formally needed is the $100,000 supplemental fee to make the restricted 14-horse Preakness field as long as there’s a slot open. So far, a dozen colts and the Kentucky Derby winning gelding Mine That Bird plan to race on Saturday.

Both new owner Jess Jackson and trainer Steve Asmussen said last week that if Rachel Alexandra continued to do well she would run against the boys.

Derby Trial Winner Hull Out Of The Preakness Stakes Field

Online Horse BettingDerby Trial winner Hull will not race in the Preakness Stakes 2009 and instead will run in the Woody Stephens Stakes on June 6 at Belmont Park, home of the Belmont Stakes 2009.

Barry Irwin of co-owner Team Valor said he expects the pace of the Preakness Stakes on May 16 at Pimlico Race Course to be too much for Hull, who is unbeaten but has had only 3 starts. Hull didn’t start as a 2-year-old because of shin problems.

Irwin told the Lexington Herald-Leader the Preakness would have been Hull’s first at such a distance and that he wasn’t comfortable with the speed that would be in the second leg of the Triple Crown. The Woody Stephens is 7 furlongs, while the Preakness is 1 3/16 miles.

Filly Rachel Alexandra Clear For The Preakness Stakes 2009

SBG Global RacebookFilly Rachel Alexandra will get her shot to run with the boys in the Preakness Stakes 2009.

Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird race horse owner Mark Allen said he wouldn’t enter colt Indy Express into the Preakness Stakes which clears the way for the Kentucky Oaks winner Rachel Alexandra to enter the Preakness on May 16 at Pimlico Race Course.

Mark Allen had considered entering Indy Express–winless in 9 career starts–over the weekend to take a spot from filly Rachel Alexandra, but he reconsidered after talking to Mine That Bird race horse trainer Bennie Woolley Jr. and co-owner Leonard Blach.

Kentucky Oaks Winner Rachel Alexandra Doubtful For The Preakness Stakes 2009

Online Horse BettingKentucky Oaks winner Rachel Alexandra turned in a strong workout Sunday morning at Churchill Downs, but a full field of 14 Triple Crown-nominated horses could stymie plans to enter the standout filly in Saturday’s the Preakness Stakes 2009.

Pimlico officials had been expecting a field of 13 Preakness starters–including Rachel Alexandra–to be entered in the Preakness Stakes, but late Sunday afternoon it appeared that the filly who captured the Kentucky Oaks by more than 20 lengths might be excluded from the Preakness entries list by the prospect of 2 new Preakness contenders being entered.

Rachel Alexandra was not nominated to the Triple Crown, but she could be eligible to compete in the Preakness if her new owner, Stonestreet Stables, owned by Jess Jackson, pays a $100,000 supplemental entry fee and one of the 14 positions in the Preakness field is available.

The Preakness Stakes 2009 Contenders List Taking Shape

SBG Global RacebookThirteen race horses are expected for the Preakness Stakes on May 16 at Pimlico Race Course, but a decision on entering superstar filly Rachel Alexandra against the boys won’t be made until she works out.

That could happen Sunday or Monday at Churchill Downs, where she won the Kentucky Oaks by 20 lengths on May 1.

The Preakness field began taking shape Saturday, with race horse trainer William Komlo announcing that Tone It Down will run in the 1 3/16-mile Preakness Stakes 2009. Hall of Fame race horse trainer Shug McGaughey informed race officials that Conservative will not.
