Online Horse BettingBy GREG MELIKOV

Horses that run in the Kentucky Derby no matter where they finish have held a distinct advantage in the Preakness during the past quarter-century. An amazing 22 of the past 25 Kentucky Derby runners captured the Preakness.

Surprisingly the only exceptions came in the 21st Century: filly Rachel Alexandra, ’09; Bernardini, ’06; and Red Bullet, ’00.

Four Kentucky Derby winners the past decade were successful at Pimlico…

The Preakness 2010 Just Might Attract a Full Field

SBG Global RacebookBy GREG MELIKOV

There’s a good chance the $1-million Preakness Stakes 2010 will have its third 14-horse Preakness field since 1992 when Pine Bluff came from off the pace to triumph by three-quarters of a length.

Despite Super Saver’s impressive victory in the Kentucky Derby, 15 other 3-year-olds, including seven that bypassed Louisville, are under consideration for the 135th Run for the Black-eyed Susans.

While the Kentucky Derby is restricted to 20 starters, the Preakness is limited to 14 horses in a three-tiered process to select the Preakness entries.

The Preakness Stakes Field: I Call ‘em the Way I See ‘em

The 134th Preakness Stakes 2009 features 13 horses going 1 3/16 miles on Saturday. I’m classifying them in several categories from those 3-year-olds that stand little chance to those Preakness horses that wouldn’t surprise.

Kentucky Oaks Winner Rachel Alexandra Entered To The Preakness Stakes 2009

SBG Global RacebookKentucky Oaks winner Rachel Alexandra is among 13 race horses entered for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes field.

Filly Rachel Alexandra was entered Wednesday to run against the boys in the Preakness, along with 50-1 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and Kentucky Derby runner-up Pioneerof the Nile.

Rachel Alexandra’s new owners paid a $100,000 supplemental fee to get her in the Preakness Stakes because she wasn’t nominated to any of the Triple Crown races. The expectation was that she would compete only against her own gender.

A Little Lady Takes on the Big Boys in Preakness

SBG Global RacebookBy GREG MELIKOV

They’ll be a new player in Baltimore for the 134th Preakness Stakes. She’s the likely favorite — Rachel Alexandra.

All that’s formally needed is the $100,000 supplemental fee to make the restricted 14-horse Preakness field as long as there’s a slot open. So far, a dozen colts and the Kentucky Derby winning gelding Mine That Bird plan to race on Saturday.

Both new owner Jess Jackson and trainer Steve Asmussen said last week that if Rachel Alexandra continued to do well she would run against the boys.

Derby Trial Winner Hull Out Of The Preakness Stakes Field

Online Horse BettingDerby Trial winner Hull will not race in the Preakness Stakes 2009 and instead will run in the Woody Stephens Stakes on June 6 at Belmont Park, home of the Belmont Stakes 2009.

Barry Irwin of co-owner Team Valor said he expects the pace of the Preakness Stakes on May 16 at Pimlico Race Course to be too much for Hull, who is unbeaten but has had only 3 starts. Hull didn’t start as a 2-year-old because of shin problems.

Irwin told the Lexington Herald-Leader the Preakness would have been Hull’s first at such a distance and that he wasn’t comfortable with the speed that would be in the second leg of the Triple Crown. The Woody Stephens is 7 furlongs, while the Preakness is 1 3/16 miles.
