Big Brown drew the inside post in the 140th Belmont Stakes and was established as the morning line 2-5 favorite on Wednesday.
The colt could go off at even lower odds on Saturday after his bullet breeze of a minute for five furlongs 24 hours earlier on Belmont Park’s main track. Rick Dutrow Jr. pronounced the son of Boundary fit and ready to become the 12th Triple Crown winner.
Six of the past 10 horses since 1979 that had a shot at immortality also were odds-on favorites, but finished second three times, third twice and fourth.
The closest to pulling it off was Real Quiet in ‘98 who fell a nose short. Ironically, Kent Desormeaux was aboard the runner-up that day — Big Brown’s rider.
While Dutrow told BloodHorse.com before the draw he preferred an outside post, he didn’t appear disturbed that his horse will break from No. 1. “I just can’t see a post getting him beat. It doesn’t matter what post he drew. He is much better than these horses.”

The A Team for the Belmont Stakes, according to the so-called racing experts, is comprised of Big Brown and Casino Drive. Both are undefeated Belmont Stakes entries.
Big Brown already has proved he’s the crème de la crème of the 3-year-old crop, winning the first two legs of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. The son of Boundary has scored two impressive victories from extremely outside posts.
Meanwhile, the so-called buzz horse, Casino Drive, has raced just twice, once in Japan last year. He won the Peter Pan Stakes by 2 1/2 lengths at Belmont Park on May 10, but didn’t beat much of a field.
So how do the two top Belmont Stakes contenders shape up?

Since Affirmed became the 11th Triple Crown winner in 1978, 10 horses have won the Kentucky Derby as well as the Preakness only to fail in the Belmont Stakes. A look at how the spoilers won:
2004–Birdstone (36-1) trails Smarty Jones by 6 lengths coming out of the far turn, then takes up the chase from the far outside. Drifts out in the upper stretch, a right-handed whip straightens his course with an eighth of a mile to go. Closes steadily with a sixteenth left, wears down Smarty Jones with 70 yards to go and wins by a length.
2003–Empire Maker (2-1) stalks pace set by Funny Cide, edges closer on the far turn and draws alongside with three-eighths of a mile to go. Shakes off Funny Cide for clear advantage leaving the quarter pole, turns back challenge by Ten Most Wanted and wins by three-quarters of a length with Funny Cide third, 5 lengths back.

The first Belmont Stakes was staged at Jerome Park on June 19, 1867, a year after its founder brought organized racing to the metropolitan New York City area.
Leonard Jerome named the race for his friend August Belmont, a leading banker that helped finance the track. Jerome Park, an oddly shaped, English-style racecourse, required runners to negotiate three turns instead of two because of a dip in the middle of the backstretch.
A filly named Ruthless won the inaugural Belmont Stakes a half-dozen years before the Preakness debuted and eight years ahead of the Kentucky Derby.
