Looking for Longshot in The Belmont Stakes 2010? Here’s a Brief Guide
If you’re looking for a longshot to win the Belmont Stakes, this brief guide should prove helpful. Eight of the past 10 Belmont Stakes winners weren’t favored, including four that went off at higher than 10-1.
All but one of those winners broke their maiden at age 2. The exception, however, was no slouch.
Trainer Todd Pletcher’s Rags to Riches went into the Belmont 2007 with three victories in stakes against females and edged the Preakness champ Curlin by a head. The daughter of A.P. Indy was only the third filly to triumph — the first in 102 years.

Most Belmont Stakes Entries Seeking Second Stakes Win
Horses headed to the Belmont Stakes don’t exactly exude class. Seven likely Belmont Stakes starters are seeking their second stakes win.
The seven ran in 27 stakes since January. However, eight of the likely 10-horse Belmont Stakes field never ran in juvenile stakes. For both years, the total record: 7-5-4 in 32 outings.
Looking back over the past decade, four of six Belmont Stakes winners went into the Belmont with at least two triumphs, including a pair that had five each despite losing in the Kentucky Derby.

One Belmont Stakes Myth Keeps on Kicking
The word is out again perpetuating a racing myth that won’t go away — the Belmont Stakes belongs to stretch runners.
A couple of examples from two major horse racing websites that will go nameless:
“Kentucky Derby runner-up Ice Box, the likely morning-line favorite for the June 5 Belmont Stakes, breezed four furlongs in 49 3/5 over the fast Oklahoma track in Saratoga on Tuesday.”

The Belmont Stakes Lacks Kentucky Derby, Preakness Winners
The Belmont Stakes 142 will not have the winning 3-year-old from the Kentucky Derby or Preakness in the Belmont field for the second time in five years.
In 2006, Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro suffered a crippling injury early in the Preakness that proved fatal in early ’07. The Preakness winner, Bernardini, didn’t run in the Belmont or Kentucky Derby. In addition, Jazil, who skipped the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, won the Belmont Stakes.

Kentucky Derby Runners Hold Distinct Advantage in The Preakness Stakes
Horses that run in the Kentucky Derby no matter where they finish have held a distinct advantage in the Preakness during the past quarter-century. An amazing 22 of the past 25 Kentucky Derby runners captured the Preakness.
Surprisingly the only exceptions came in the 21st Century: filly Rachel Alexandra, ’09; Bernardini, ’06; and Red Bullet, ’00.
Four Kentucky Derby winners the past decade were successful at Pimlico…

The Preakness 2010 Just Might Attract a Full Field
There’s a good chance the $1-million Preakness Stakes 2010 will have its third 14-horse Preakness field since 1992 when Pine Bluff came from off the pace to triumph by three-quarters of a length.
Despite Super Saver’s impressive victory in the Kentucky Derby, 15 other 3-year-olds, including seven that bypassed Louisville, are under consideration for the 135th Run for the Black-eyed Susans.
While the Kentucky Derby is restricted to 20 starters, the Preakness is limited to 14 horses in a three-tiered process to select the Preakness entries.
