Last Friday, January 4, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, National Turf Writers Association, and Daily Racing Form announced the finalists for the 2007 Eclipse Awards. Winners will be announced at the 37th Annual Eclipse Awards Ceremony on Monday, January 21 at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, D Pirates Marker will run in the $100,000 Cat’s Cradle Handicap at Hollywood Park on Friday, December 21.

Nite Light ridden by Mike Luzzi wins by a neck over Successful Affair on Wednesday, December 5, to win the $76,700 Coyote Lakes Stakes in snowing Aqueduct.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, 3-year-old Nite Light improved to 3-for-6, covered 1 1/2 miles in 2:34.33 and paid $10.80, $5 and $4.50. Successful Affair and Malibu Moonshine, the favored entry at 6-5, finished second and third and each returned $2.70 and $2.80.

Trainer of 2007 Kentucky Derby and Travers Stakes winner Street Sense, Carl Nafzger became a two-time winner of the Big Sport of Turfdom award presented by the Turf Publicists of America on Tuesday.
“This is tremendous honor,” Carl Nafzger said. “I never expected to get this award twice. I don’t know what to say. I always do my best to cooperate with the media requests. I think we had a good time. I know I did.”

2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and leading candidate for Horse of the Year, Curlin’s racing future is still undecided. According to trainer Steve Asmussen, Curlin is not immediately scheduled for active training, and will walk the shed under tack for now.
Steve Asmussen has guided Curlin’s racing career since just after the Smart Strike colt’s maiden victory at Gulfstream Park. He brought him to Fair Grounds early last season, eventually shipped him to Oaklawn to win the Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby, and then saddled Curlin to capture the Preakness Stakes and Jockey Club Gold Cup prior to the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Sugar Shake, winner of the Turnback the Alarm Handicap, seeks for her fourth graded stakes victory of the year in the 1 1/16-mile $150,000 Bayakoa Handicap (gr. II) for fillies and mares on December 1 at Hollywood Park.
On this Saturday’s Bayakoa Handicap, the entire field lines up as follows from the rail out: Lavender Sky with Alex Solis; Sugar Shake with Rafael Bejarano; Sohgol with Joseph Talamo; Romance Is Diane with Michael Baze; Tough Tiz’s Sis with Garrett Gomez; Fonce De with Tyler Baze; and Grain of Truth with Corey Nakatani.

Bill Hartack, the 74-year-old Hall of Famer who is also a five-time Kentucky Derby winner, was found dead in a cabin in Freer, Texas while on a hunting vacation. He died Monday night, November 26th, from natural causes due to heart disease according to Dr. Corinne Stern, the chief medical examiner in south Texas’ Webb County.
Dr. Stern said Tuesday that Hartack’s family has been notified, and funeral arrangements were being made.
Fellow Hall of Fame rider Eddie Arcaro and Bill Hartack are the only jockeys to win the Kentucky Derby five times. Bill Hartack won his first Kentucky Derby with Iron Liege in 1957. He then won with Venetian Way in 1960, Decidedly in 1962, Northern Dancer in 1964 and Majestic Prince in 1969.
Hartack won the Preakness Stakes aboard Fabius in 1956, Northern Dancer in 1964 and Majestic Prince in 1969. His only Belmont Stakes win came in 1960 aboard Celtic Ash.

Four weeks after winning the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, Midnight Lute was upset by Daaher in the final Grade 1 race of the year in New York, the $300,000 Cigar Mile Handicap at Aqueduct on Saturday, November 24th.
Daaher covered one mile in 1:33.79, and returned $6.70 and $2.80. 1-2 favorite Midnight Lute paid $2.10. Naughty New Yorker was third, followed by Xchanger and Sir Greeley. There was no show wagering. City Attraction and Diamond Isle were scratched.

A.P. Arrow ridden by Ramon Dominguez won the $500,000 Clark Handicap (Grade II) with a three-quarter length victory on Friday, November 23rd at Churchill Downs.
A.P. Arrow covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.66 and paid $22.40, $10 and $5.20. Brass Hat and jockey Willie Martinez took second place and returned $13.20 and $3.20. Diamond Stripes and rider Cornelio Velasquez came in third and paid $3.20 to show.

Trained by Barclay Tagg, Nobiz Like Shobiz will race in the 66th running of Hollywood Derby at Hollywood Park on Sunday, November 25th. Barclay Tagg could become the first trainer to gain a consecutive win of the Hollywood Derby after shipping last year’s winner, Showing Up.
Horses racing on the 2007 Hollywood Derby will line up as follows: Warning Zone, Twilight Meteor, Daytona, Patch of Blue, Bold Hawk, Worldly, Augment, Nobiz Like Shobiz, Ten a Penny, Mostacolli Mort, Medici Code.
