Dubai World Cup winner and North America’s 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin will have a well-deserved rest before returning to the track for the second part of the year.
Horse trainer Steve Asmussen reported Curlin to be full of energy after his winning effort and said Curlin would be sent to New York on April 2 to clear quarantine at Belmont Park.
On April 6, the 4-year-old son of Smart Strike, Curlin, will be shipped to Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, where he eventually will resume light training on the Polytrack surface.
Curlin, unraced as a 2-year-old, had an impressive campaign as a 3-year-old. He won the Preakness Stakes and placed in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. He also won the Arkansas Derby, Jockey Club Gold Cup and Breeders’ Cup Classic en route to winning the Horse of the Year and top 3-year-old male honors.

A dozen to be the 2008 finalists for election to the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame. The 12 finalists consisting of 7 horses, 3 jockeys, and 2 trainers were determined by a vote of the Hall of Fame Nominating Committee.

To be eligible, trainers must be licensed and actively involved with Thoroughbreds for 25 years or have been retired for a minimum of five years. The finalists for Hall of Fame trainers are:
Carl Nafzger, 66, has trained two Kentucky Derby winners, Unbridled in 1990, and Street Sense in 2007. Both were division champions, as was Banshee Breeze, the outstanding 3-year-old filly of 1998. Unbridled also won the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 1990 and Street Sense was the first winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to win the Kentucky Derby. Through the end of 2007, Carl Nafzger had 1,068 victories from 8,041 mounts, purse earnings of $50,203,640 and 68 graded stakes victories.

The brightest stars in the horse racing industry will gather on Louisiana Derby Preview Day at Fair Grounds Saturday, February 9.
All three Eclipse Award champion jockey finalists, winner Garrett Gomez, Robby Albarado and John Velazquez will be riding at Fair Grounds this Saturday. The top 2 Eclipse Award vote-getters for top trainer, winner Todd Pletcher and Steve Asmusse will also send out their horses to participate in Saturday’s horse racing program.
And with the spotlight on the 3-year-old divisions, half of the six Eclipse Award finalists for champion 2-year-old male and 2-year-old filly of 2007 are scheduled to run at Fair Grounds on Louisiana Derby Preview Day, including filly champion Indian Blessing.

Almost reaching the record of 450 last year, 448 thoroughbreds, 446 of which are males and 2 fillies, were made eligible for the 2008 Triple Crown races: Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes when early nominations were released.
Four-time Eclipse Award winner Todd Pletcher led all trainers for the 5th year in a row with 31 nominees. Todd Pletcher ended a 0-for-28 run in Triple Crown races last year when his filly Rags to Riches won the Belmont Stakes. Among his promising 3-year-olds are Cowboy Cal and Monba.
Two-time Kentucky Derby winning trainer, Nick Zito nominated 19 3-year-olds for the Triple Crown races, including the undefeated War Pass.
The first leg of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby, will be held at Churchill Downs on May 3. The Preakness Stakes will be on May 17 at Pimlico Race Course. Belmont Stakes will be at Belmont Park on June 7.

Preakness Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Curlin won the Horse of the Year and 3-year-old Male honors at the 37th Annual Eclipse Awards on Monday night, January 21.
Curlin took a landslide vote over the competition in Horse of the Year voting, receiving 249 first-place votes to 12 for Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches. The 2006 Horse of the Year, Invasor, earned two votes.
Corinthian, English Channel and Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense received one each in balloting by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), Daily Racing Form (DRF) and National Turf Writers Association.
Curlin dominated Street Sense and Kentucky Derby runner-up Hard Spun in voting for 3-year-old Male category. Curlin got 262 votes, Street Sense 3 and Hard Spun 1.
Curlin’s 2007 campaign were included winning the Arkansas Derby and the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Horse trainer Steve Asmussen’s Z Fortune showed that he can be a legitimate contender for the Triple Crown races as he won the $100,000 LeComte Stakes (gr. III) at Fair Grounds on Saturday, January 12.
The Lecomte Stakes is the first Kentucky Derby prep race at Fair Grounds. The next race in the Fair Grounds Kentucky Derby prep series is the Risen Star Stakes on February 9.
Maintaining a 3-for-3 lifetime record, Z Fortune, ridden by jockey Shaun Bridgemohan covered a mile in 1:37.79 and paid $12, $5.60 and $4. Blackberry Road rallied to finish second under jockey Calvin Borel and returned $4.20 and $2.80. Mad Flatter with jockey James Graham paid $6 to show.

The richest day of state-bred racing, the sixth annual Sunshine Millions, which pits Florida-breds against California-breds for $3.6 million in purses at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita Park, will have some Maryland flavor this year as horse trainer Mike Trombetta and jockey Jeremy Rose represent the state of Maryland at Santa Anita on Saturday, January 26.

Last Friday, January 4, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, National Turf Writers Association, and Daily Racing Form announced the finalists for the 2007 Eclipse Awards. Winners will be announced at the 37th Annual Eclipse Awards Ceremony on Monday, January 21 at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, D Pirates Marker will run in the $100,000 Cat’s Cradle Handicap at Hollywood Park on Friday, December 21.

Nite Light ridden by Mike Luzzi wins by a neck over Successful Affair on Wednesday, December 5, to win the $76,700 Coyote Lakes Stakes in snowing Aqueduct.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, 3-year-old Nite Light improved to 3-for-6, covered 1 1/2 miles in 2:34.33 and paid $10.80, $5 and $4.50. Successful Affair and Malibu Moonshine, the favored entry at 6-5, finished second and third and each returned $2.70 and $2.80.
