Haskell Shaping Up as Competitive, Key Summer Race

Monmouth Park’s 43rd Haskell Invitational will give the winner a leg up in the quest for top 3-year-old honors in 2010. It will pit winners of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, plus the Belmont Stakes runner-up, in a very competitive race.

The Preakness heroine Rachel Alexandra and Belmont winner Summer Bird clashed in last year’s Monmouth Park showcase race and the filly cruised to a six-length victory. It broke a 4-4 tie between Preakness-Belmont combatants since the inaugural in ’68.

Two Stakes Attract Several Runners in Triple Crown Events

A pair of stakes Saturday on different surfaces has lured several 3-year-olds that ran in one or more Triple Crown races this year.

The $600,000 Virginia Derby on Saturday features three colts in the eight-horse field that have enjoyed more success on turf than dirt.

Likely favorite Paddy O’Prado, third in the Kentucky Derby and sixth in the Preakness, is going for his third victory on the grass. He hit the board in all five trips over three different turf courses, going 2-1-2, and is the horse to beat.

Summit of Speed Is Sprint Day of the Year at Calder Race Course

Saturday’s Summit of Speed at Calder Race Course features seven stakes worth $1.35 million that has lured scores of sprinters from throughout the country.

Two stakes, each valued at $350,000, are designated Win and You’re in the Breeders’ Cup: The Princess Rooney and Smile Sprint handicaps. Each six-furlong race carries a $350,000 purse and attracted 13 entries.

The Princess Rooney attracted fillies and mares 3-years-old and up aiming for a spot in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

Haynesfield Wins The Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park July 3

SBG  Global RacebookTurtle Bird Stable’s Haynesfield, ridden by jockey Ramon Dominguez, won the $300,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park on Saturday, July 3.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Haynesfield covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.52 and paid $9.90, $4.40 and $2.70. Convocation, under jockey Kent Desormeaux, placed second and returned $4.20 and $2.50. I Want Revenge with jockey Joe Talamo aboard came in third and paid $2.10 to show.

I Want Revenge Aims to Rebound in Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park

I Want Revenge aims to live up to his name and rebound in Saturday’s $300,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park. The son of Stephen Got Even was favored to win the Kentucky Derby 2009 when he suffered a left-front ankle injury and was scratched the morning of the race.

Filling in his ankle proved more serious than first thought — significant ligament damage. No one was sure he would even race again.

Colonial Turf Cup Sought by Seven 3-Year-Olds

Two Kentucky Derby starters that have better records on grass than other surfaces head a field of seven 3-year-olds in Saturday’s $500,000 Colonial Turf Cup.

Likely favorite Paddy O’Prado, third at Louisville, has hit the board in all four turf outings. The son of El Prado won Gulfstream Park‘s Palm Beach Stakes by 2 1/2 lengths over Dean’s Kitten, his main challenger at Colonial Downs. He was victorious from the inside post, which he drew for the 1 3/16-contest on the outer turf course at Colonial Downs.

Drosselmeyer Wins The Belmont Stakes 2010 at Belmont Park June 5

SBG  Global RacebookWinStar Farm’s 13-1 longshot Drosselmeyer, ridden by jockey Mike Smith , won Saturday’s $1-million Belmont Stakes 2010 on June 5 at Belmont Park.

Trained by Bill Mott, Drosselmeyer covered 1 1/2 miles in 2:31.57 and paid $28, $11.60 and $7.70. Fly Down, under jockey John Velazquez, placed second and returned $6.80 and $5.10. First Dude with jockey Ramon Dominguez aboard came in third and paid $9.90 to show.

Looking for Longshot in The Belmont Stakes 2010? Here’s a Brief Guide

If you’re looking for a longshot to win the Belmont Stakes, this brief guide should prove helpful. Eight of the past 10 Belmont Stakes winners weren’t favored, including four that went off at higher than 10-1.

All but one of those winners broke their maiden at age 2. The exception, however, was no slouch.

Trainer Todd Pletcher’s Rags to Riches went into the Belmont 2007 with three victories in stakes against females and edged the Preakness champ Curlin by a head. The daughter of A.P. Indy was only the third filly to triumph — the first in 102 years.
