Every so often there’s talk of resurrecting Hialeah Park, the crown jewel of South Florida racing for decades. But each time the dialogue fades to a whisper, and then disappears like the racetrack did seven years ago.
The latest initiative warrants this warning first penned in 1785 by poet Robert Burns in his To a Mouse:
The best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men
Gang aft agley,
An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain,
For promis’d joy!
Translation: The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray; broken promises leave us with grief and pain.
I was heartbroken when once beautiful Hialeah died…

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP)–Kentucky horse racing regulators have approved a major ban on anabolic steroids that could outlaw the drugs for next year’s Kentucky Derby and other races in the state.
The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission approved the measure unanimously Monday. Gov. Steve Beshear has said he’ll support an emergency order to enact the ban in time for next the 2009 Kentucky Derby.
The new rules would prohibit horses from racing with any steroid in their system. Three naturally occurring steroids would still be allowed for therapeutic purposes, but even those must be out of the race horse’s system by 60 days before a race.
Among the steroids banned is the drug Big Brown had in his system before winning this year’s Kentucky Derby.

The reigning winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, Big Brown has not run since winning the Haskell Invitational August 3 at Monmouth Park.
Rather than having Big Brown make the quick turnaround to run in the Travers Stakes, which will be held Saturday, August 23, at Saratoga, owner Michael Iavarone said he wants the colt to run a grass race in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup Classic on October 25 at Santa Anita, which has a synthetic surface.

Michael Iavarone, co-owner of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown, said Wednesday he has no plans to enter his colt in the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga on August 30 despite an invitation from Jess Jackson, the majority owner of 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Horse of the Year Curlin.
Race horse owner Jess Jackson offered to donate $50,000 to charity if Big Brown takes on Curlin in 1 1/8-mile Woodward on the dirt. Jess Jackson’s invitation comes after Big Brown trainer Rick Dutrow said he thought Big Brown could beat Curlin in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park on October 25.
