In 1868, Maryland Gov. Oden Bowie and his friends, prominent racing figures, agreed at a dinner party in Saratoga to commemorate the evening with a race in two years for yearlings at the time.
Both Saratoga, the first U.S. track that debuted four years earlier, and the American Jockey Club bid for the event. But Bowie pledged to build a model track in Maryland if the race was staged there.

Odds Are Breeders’ Cup 2006 Main Event Will Be a True Horse Racing Classic
By GREG MELIKOV The main event of this year’s 2006 Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, without a doubt, is the Breeders Cup Classic. The 23rd renewal should live up to its name at Churchill Downs.
During five previous Breeders Cup Days at the historic Louisville track – home to the Kentucky Derby, there have been exciting Classic races: Tiznow edged Giant’s Causeway by a neck in 2000, Awesome Again defeated Silver Charm by three-quarters of a length in ’98 and Alysheba beat Striking the Gold by a half-length in ’89.

Dubai World Cup Champion Electrocutionist Dies
NEWMARKET, England (AP) — Dubai World Cup winner Electrocutionist died of an apparent heart attack Saturday, several days after an abnormality was detected in the 5-year-old horse’s heart.
Electrocutionist, considered a top contender for the upcoming Breeders’ Cup Classic or the Distaff, was owned by Dubai-based Godolphin Racing Inc.
“He appeared to be responding well to treatment, but during the night he suffered what seems to have been a fatal heart attack,” Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said. “It is terribly sad. He was a great horse for Godolphin and a real stable favorite. He will be sorely missed by all of us.”
The Kentucky-bred son on Red Ransom won the $6 million Dubai World Cup — the world’s richest horse race — on March 25, and finished second in his last start, the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot on July 29. Electrocutionist also finished second behind Ouija Board in the Prince of Wales’ Stakes at Ascot eight days earlier.
Electrocutionist won eight of his 12 career starts, including three Group Ones, and won more than $5.6 million. He was owned by Earle Mack and trained in Italy by Valfredo Valiani before being bought by Godolphin in November.
He raced four times for the Dubai-based stable, with his next start to be the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket on Oct. 14.
