Unbeaten filly Zarkava who defeated the boys in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, was chosen as Europe’s Horse of the Year at the Cartier Racing Awards on Monday night.
The 3-year-old Zarkava owned by the Aga Khan won all 5 of her starts this year, capped by a two-length victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe against Europe’s best middle-distance horses.
Zarkava won the award over Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Raven’s Pass, English Derby winner New Approach, 5-time Group 1 winner Duke of Marmalade and 4-time Group 1 winner and Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up Henrythenavigator.

The richest card in Woodbine’s thoroughbred horse history (excluding the 1996 Breeders’ Cup) is set for Saturday, October 4, highlighted by the $2-million Canadian International Stakes (G1).
Not only will the Canadian International, which drew a field of 10 turf specialists, be contested, so will 3 other turf stakes — the $1 million E.P. Taylor Stakes for fillies and mares, the $500,000 Nearctic Stakes for sprinters, and the $300,000 Summer Stakes for 2-year-olds. All 4 events are 2008 Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” horse races where the winners be one of the Breeders’ Cup contenders into their respective Breeders’ Cup races, slated for October 24-25 at Santa Anita.
The 71st edition of the 1 1/2 mile Canadian International, Canada’s richest horse race, over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course at Woodbine with post time on 5:48 pm ET.

Not Bourbon stalked the pace early, surged into the lead in upper stretch, then held off hard-charging filly Ginger Grew by a head in the 149th running of the $1 million Queen’s Plate at Woodbine Racetrack, earning the affable horse trainer Roger Attfield yet another in a long list of Canadian thoroughbred racing accomplishments.
Not Bourbon’s win earned owner Charles Fipke, a native of Edmonton, the $600,000 top prize on a breezy, cloudy afternoon. Not Bourbon, the 9-2 third choice, finished the 1 1/2 -mile race in 2:03.59 and paid $11.30, $5.10 and $3.40.
A head behind the winner Not Bourbon, Ginger Brew, under jockey Javier Castellano, returned $3.80 and $3. Solitaire with jockey Robert Landry came in third and paid $2.90 to show.
The Queen’s Plate Stakes is the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. The second leg of Canada’s series is the Prince of Wales Stakes at 1 3/16 miles on dirt at Fort Erie July 13. The final race of the Canadian Triple Crown is the Breeders’ Stakes on turf at 1 1/2 miles on August 3 back at Woodbine.

After Horse of the Year Curlin’s 4 1/4 length victory in the Stephen Foster Handicap, horse trainer Steve Asmussen says he’s planning to work Curlin on turf while considering a trip to Paris for a bid in France’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I), Europe’s greatest race for older horses.
“We’ve talked about it since last year, since the (Breeders’ Cup) Classic and he (Jess Jackson, owner of Stonestreet Stable) put him back in training,” said horse trainer Steve Asmussen.
Curlin, who has a record of 9-1-2 in 12 career starts, will work on the Churchill Downs turf course and be pointed to a turf race in the United States in July. Among the possibilities are the $500,000 Man O’ War (gr. I) at 1 3/8 miles at Belmont Park and the $200,000 Arlington Handicap (gr. III) at 1 1/4 miles at Arlington Park., both on July 12.

The 4-year-old favorite son of Smart Strike, Curlin, did not disappoint horse racing fans as he won the US$6 million Dubai World Cup by 7 3/4 lengths on Saturday, March 29, at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse.
Curlin’s final time for the 1 miles was 2:00:15, the third fastest in 13 runnings of the Dubai World Cup.
Curlin, 2007 Preakness Stakes winner and 3rd in last year’s Kentucky Derby, now has a four-race winning streak. After finishing a close second to the filly Rags to Riches in the Belmont Stakes, Curlin took the Jockey Club Gold Cup, the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the February 28 Jaguar Trophy Handicap in Dubai.

Honour Devil, ridden by jockey John Murtagh, pulled away in the stretch for an easy 4 3/4-length victory in the $2 million UAE Derby, one of the 2008 Kentucky Derby prep races, at Nad Al Sheba racetrack.
The 4-year-old colt bred in Argentina, Honour Devil, is trained by South African Michael de Kock, who also trains the runner-up Royal Vintage. Honour Devil is owned by Dubai’s Sheik Khalifa. Honour Devil has won four of five career starts.
Zayat Stables’ Massive Drama, America’s top hope in the UAE Derby at 1,800 meters (about 1 1/8 miles), led the field to the straight but was hard-pressed from that point on under Garrett Gomez for trainer Dale Romans. Strike the Deal was the first to sweep past to lead briefly before being tackled by the Mike de Kock duo. Massive Drama faded to 9th.

With a purse of US$6 million, the Dubai World Cup (Group 1) is the richest horse race. Thirtine horses all over the world will compete for the US$3.6 million first prize.

After arriving in Dubai on Monday night, horse trainer Dale Romans, best known in Dubai as the trainer of 2005 Dubai World Cup winner Roses in May, sent Massive Drama out on Tuesday for an easy 5-furlong breeze and was delighted with the result.
“He looked great and handled the track real well,” horse trainer Dale Romans said of his challenger for the $2 million UAE Derby (UAE-II), one of the 2008 Kentucky Derby prep races. “He was on hand and he did it easily. And I just wanted whatever he did to be done easily. It was very exciting to see.”
The clocker at Nad Al Sheba reported a half-mile time of :46.59 for Massive Drama and offered the comment: “Impressive work; very fit.”

Horse of the Year Curlin won his first race as a 4-year-old in the $1750,000 Jaguar Trophy at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse Thursday, February 28. It was his 2008 debut.
Racing for the first time since winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic last October, Curlin, ridden by jockey Robby Albarado, covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:00.60. Familiar Territory was 2 1/4 lengths behind followed by Jet Express who placed 3rd in the 6-horse event.
Unraced as a 2-year-old, Curlin had an impressive campaign as a 3-year-old. He won the Preakness Stakes and placed in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. He also won the Arkansas Derby and Jockey Club Gold Cup en route to winning the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year and top 3-year-old male.
