Zenyatta Wins The Apple Blossom Invitational Handicap at Oaklawn Park April 9

A day before the $1-million Arkansas Derby 2010, Jerry and Ann Moss’s unbeaten Zenyatta, ridden by jockey Mike Smith, won the $490,000 Apple Blossom Invitational Handicap at Oaklawn Park on Friday, April 9.

Online Horse BettingTrained by John Shirreffs, Zenyatta covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.71 and paid $2.10 across the board. Taptam, under jockey Cliff Berry, placed second and returned $6.40. There was no show wagering because of the small Apple Blossom field.

With the Apple Blossom win, Zenyatta equaled the horse racing record jointly held by Cigar and Citation for wins in unrestricted racing without defeat and established a stakes record of 1:50.3, since this was the first time in its 45-year history that the Apple Blossom was run at 1 1/8 miles.

Without Rachel Alexandra, the Apple Blossom purse reverted to $500,000, with Zenyatta earning $300,000.

Still, track president Charles Cella came out ahead. Instead of costing him $5 million, he lost $172,753 because of minus win and place pools. The rare negative win pool alone was $27,275.

Sent off at 1-20 odds, Zenyatta went four-wide leaving the final turn on her way to the front. She drew clear down the stretch to extend the streak that began 2 1/2 years ago. She’s won all her races by a total of 33 3/4 lengths.
