Sidney’s Candy Wins The San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park March 13
Sid and Jenny Craig’s Kentucky Derby contender Sidney’s Candy, ridden by jockey Joe Talamo, won the $150,000 San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, March 13.
Trained by John Sadler, Sidney’s Candy raced 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.30 and paid $9.60, $5.20 and $3.20. Interactif, under jockey Rafael Bejarano, placed second and returned $6.60 and $3.20. Caracortado with jockey Paul Atkinson aboard came in third and paid $2.40 to show.
Jockey Joe Talamo finds himself with a Kentucky Derby contender less than a year after his Kentucky Derby day ended in disappointment when his mount I Want Revenge became the first morning-line horse betting favorite to be scratched from the Kentucky Derby, with a leg injury.
Race horse trainer John Sadler is ready to move Sidney’s Candy on to the Santa Anita Derby on April 3. He also trains sixth-place finisher Dave in Dixie, whom Sadler said didn’t handle the surface or the pace well.
The San Felipe Stakes is one of the Kentucky Derby 2010 prep races. Other Kentucky Derby hopefuls that raced in Santa Anita‘s San Felipe Stakes in order of finish: American Lion, Stephen’s Got Hope, Dave in Dixie and Erbeia.
