Odysseus Wins The Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs March 13
Padua Stables’ Odysseus, ridden by jockey Rajiv Maragh, won Saturday’s $300,000 Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) and earned his first graded stakes win at Tampa Bay Downs.
The 1 1/16-mile Tampa Bay Derby is one of the 2010 Kentucky Derby prep races scheduled on March 13.
Trained by Thomas Albertrani, Odysseus covered ran the Tampa Bay Derby distance in 1:44.31 and paid $6, $3.40 and $2.40. Schoolyard Dreams, under jockey Jeremy Rose, placed second and returned $5 and $2.80. Super Saver with jockey Ramon Dominguez aboard came in third and paid $2.40 to show.
“That’s our target, to get this horse to the Derby. We think he’s certainly good enough to belong with that group, but we’ll see how he trains in the next two weeks and make some decisions,” said race horse trainer Thomas Albertrani of Odysseus and the Kentucky Derby 2010. “We’ll see if we need to run him back again or just sit and wait. It takes a lot of pressure off to have the graded earnings at this point.”
Other Kentucky Derby hopefuls that raced in the Tampa Bay Derby in order of finish: Gleam of Hope, Uptowncharlybrown, Slammy Boy and Tuvia’s Force.
