Ice Box Wins The Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park March 20
Robert LaPenta’s 20-1 longshot Ice Box, ridden by jockey Jose Lezcano, won the $750,000 Florida Derby by a nose at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, March 20.
Trained by Nick Zito, who trained 2 Kentucky Derby winners, Ice Box covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.19 and paid $43.40, $20.40 and $9.60. Pleasant Prince, under jockey Julien Leparoux, placed second and returned $26.40 and $11.60. Florida Derby favorite Rule with jockey John Velazquez aboard came in third and paid $3.40 to show.
The Florida Derby is one of the major prep races for the Kentucky Derby 2010. Earning the $450,000 Florida Derby winners’ purse assures Ice Box’s spot in the Kentucky Derby entries list.
A decision to run Ice Box before the May 1 Kentucky Derby is yet to be made. “It’s a possibility,” said race horse trainer Nick Zito. “You never say never. But this is a tough race. Obviously, he’s had a tough winter like all these 3-year-olds. He’s had three 1 1/8th mile races in a row. You can think about running him back in three weeks, but we have to figure out what we’re going to do with him.”
Full brother to 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, Lentenor, finished fourth.
Other horses that raced in Gulfstream‘s Florida Derby in order of finish: First Dude, Pulsion, Game On Dude, Soaring Empire, Radiohead (GB), Miner’s Reserve and Best Actor.
