American Lion Wins The Illinois Derby at Hawthorne Race Course April 3

WinStar Farm’s candidate for the Kentucky Derby field, American Lion, ridden by jockey David Flores, won the $500,000 Illinois Derby (gr. III) at Hawthorne Race Course on Saturday, April 3.

Online Horse BettingTrained by Eoin Harty, American Lion covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.31 and paid $8.60, $3.80 and $2.80. Yawanna Twist, under jockey Edgar Prado, placed second and returned $2.80 and $2.20. Backtalk with jockey Miguel Mena aboard came in third and paid $3 to show.

The Illinois Derby is one of the prep races for the Kentucky Derby 2010.

“He did it today,” said Illinois Derby winning jockey David Flores. “Hopefully we go for the big one next time. The roses are the best thing to end up with. That’s my goal. Hopefully he’ll stay in good shape. Eoin knows what he’s doing. I’m just a lucky guy being here and riding this horse.”

“There is only one Derby and we plan on being there,” said race horse trainer Eoin Harty. “I think we needed to get a race over the dirt and fortunately he responded well to it.”
