Unusual Suspect Wins The Cougar II Handicap at Del Mar August 5
Barry, David and Dyan Abrams’ longshot Unusual Suspect, ridden by jockey Alonso Quinonez, won the $150,000 Cougar II Handicap at Del Mar on Wednesday, August 5.
Trained by Barry Abrams, Unusual Suspect covered 1 1/2 miles in 2:31.22 and paid $51, $18.20 and $7.20. Richard’s Kid, under jockey Victor Espinoza, placed second and returned $5.60 and $3.40. Church Service with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard came in third and paid $2.60 to show.
As part of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Challenge, the Cougar II Handicap winner Unusual Suspect has earned a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon this November at Santa Anita Park.
Other horses that raced in Del Mar’s Cougar II Handicap in order of finish: Gangbuster, Ghetto (GB), Quarter Moon, Sir Dave, Big Booster and Zappa. Mr. Big was scratched.
