Tizfiz Wins San Gorgonio Handicap at Santa Anita Park January 4
Tizfiz, ridden by jockey Agapito Delgadillo, beat Marzelline by a nose to capture the 40th running of the $150,000 San Gorgonio Handicap at Santa Anita Park Sunday, January 4.
Trained by Rafael DeLeon, Tizfiz covered 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:49.62 and paid $21, $9.80 and $7. Marzelline, under jockey Victor Espinoza, returned $3.40 and $3, while Solar Miss with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard paid $4 to show.
It was 42-year-old jockey Agapito Delgadillo’s first Grade I stakes victory.
“This is my biggest win,” said Agapito DeLeon, a native of Guatemala who has been training on his own for 4 years after being employed by the late Doug Peterson, Randy Bradshaw and D. Wayne Lukas. “I won some $75,000 races, but never a graded stakes.”
Tizfiz earned $90,000 to boost her lifetime total to $233,160 with a record to record of 5-3-0 in 12 starts.
Other horses that raced in Santa Anita’s San Gorgonio Handicap in order of finish: Valbenny, Belmont Cat, Meribel, Green Lyons and High Heel Sneakers.
