The Pamplemousse Wins The Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park February 28
The Pamplemousse, ridden by jockey Alex Solis, showed that he can be part of the Kentucky Derby field when he won the $200,000 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, February 28.
The Sham Stakes is a prep race for the 2009 Kentucky Derby to be held on May 2 at Churchill Downs.
Trained by Julio Canani, The Pamplemousse covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.86 and paid $3, $2.60 and $2.40. Take the Points, under jockey Garrett Gomez, placed second and returned $4, and $3.60. Mr. Hot Stuff with jockey Corey Nakatani aboard came in third and paid $3.60 to show.
“I’ve never ridden anything like him,” winning jockey Alex Solis said of The Pamplemousse who is co-owned by his son, Alex II. “The way he’s been training, I expected something like this. He has such a high cruising speed and he’s getting more and more amazing. He has such a good mind and he was real relaxed the whole way.”
The 3-year-old son of Kafwain, The Pamplemousse, will be pointed to the Santa Anita Derby on April 4. It will be his last prep before the Kentucky Derby.
Other horses that raced in Santa Anita‘s Sham Stakes in order of finish: Bourbon Bay, Unbridled Roman, Smart Bid, Mark S the Cooler, Hi Flyin Indy, Tiz True and Balfour Park. Lifeline and Ventana were scratched.
