Swift Temper Wins The July 19 Delaware Handicap & A Berth In The Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic
Mark Stanley’s Swift Temper, ridden by jockey Alan Garcia, won Sunday’s $1,000,350 Delaware Handicap at Delaware Park July 19.
As part of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup “Win & You’re In” program, Delaware Handicap winner Swift Temper gets a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic field on November at Santa Anita.
Trained by Dale Romans, Swift Temper covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.41 and paid $17, $6 and $3.80. Icon Project, under jockey Jose Valdivia Jr., placed second and returned $4.20 and $3.40. Unbridled Belle with jockey Richard Migliore aboard came in third and paid $2.20 to show.
“I thought if Unbridled Belle did not go (to the lead) we would be in front but I couldn’t figure out what she would do,” Swift Temper race horse trainer Dale Romans said. “We were planning on getting comfortable wherever we were but it worked out perfectly for us. When they left us two in front going that slow I knew they were in trouble.”
Other horses that raced in the Delaware Handicap in order of finish: Morena (PER), Temple Street and Acoma. Livin Lovin was scratched.
