Summer Bird Wins The Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course August 29
Kalarikkal and Vilasini Jayaraman’s Belmont Stakes winner, Summer Bird, ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux, won the $1-million Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on Saturday, August 29.
Trained by Tim Ice, Summer Bird covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.83 and paid $7.80, $4.30 and $2.70 as the second horse betting choice. Hold Me Back, under jockey Julien Leparoux, placed second and returned $12.40 and $5.30. Favored Quality Road with jockey John Velazquez aboard came in third and paid $2.50 to show.
Earning $600,000 as the Travers Stakes winner, Summer Bird increased his bankroll to $1,573,040 and horse racing record to 3-1-1 in 7 starts.
Summer Bird, who in his last start finished second to Rachel Alexandra in the Haskell Invitational, becomes the 30th horse in Travers history, and first since his sire, to complete the Belmont-Travers double.
“The more races he runs, I think he’s going to get better,” said race horse trainer Tim Ice. “For this race, he was already a proven Grade 1 winner. For my colt to win the Belmont and come back and win the Travers, like Birdstone, means a lot.”
