Summer Bird Wins The Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park October 3
Kalarikkal and Vilasini Jayaraman’s Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes winner Summer Bird, ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux, won the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Saturday, October 3
, and made horse racing history as the first 3-year-old since 1989 to have won all three races in a single year.
Trained by Tim Ice, Summer Bird covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.51 and paid $4.50, $2.80 and $2.10. Quality Road, under jockey John Velazquez, placed second and returned $3.80 and $3.80. Tizway with jockey Rajiv Maragh aboard came in third and paid $6.30 to show.
“I think it puts him in an elite group,” said race horse trainer Tim Ice, who trains the son of 2004 Belmont Stakes and Travers winner Birdstone. “I think he should be champion 3-year-old colt.”
The next goal for Summer Bird, whom his connections say will race again as a 4-year-old next year, is the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 7 at Santa Anita Park.
“We”ll take a couple of days and see how he is,” said race horse trainer Tim Ice.
Other horses that raced in Belmont Park‘s Jockey Club Gold Cup in order of finish: Macho Again, Dry Martini, Sette E Mezzo and Asiatic Boy.
