Richard’s Kid Wins The Pacific Classic at Del Mar September 6
Arnold Zetcher’s Richard’s Kid, ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, won by a neck over Einstein in an upset in the $1-million Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar on Sunday, September 6.
The Pacific Classic is a Breeders’ Cup 2009 “Win & You’re In” even where the Pacific Classic winner Richard’s Kid gets a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic field this fall at Santa Anita.
Trained by Bob Baffert, Richard’s Kid covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.39 and paid $50.80, $22.20 and $12.40. Einstein, under jockey Julien Leparoux, placed second and returned $6.40 and $4.80. Rail Trip with jockey Jose Valdivia, Jr. aboard came in third and paid $3.80 to show.
Richard’s Kid recorded the third biggest upset in the Pacific Classic history. The biggest upset came in 1996, when Dare and Go snapped Cigar’s 16-race winning streak, paying $81.20. The second-biggest was 1992, when Missionary Ridge beat favored mare Paseana, paying $51.
The $600,000 Pacific Classic winner’s share increased Richard’s Kid’s earnings to $759,370.
Other horses that raced in Del Mar’s Pacific Classic in order of finish: Parading, Colonel John, Song of Navarone, Awesome Gem, Global Hunter, Informed, Misremembered, Tres Borrachos and Mast Track.
