Rachel Alexandra Wins Kentucky Oaks 2009 at Churchill Downs May 1
L and M Partners’ Rachel Alexandra, ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, won Friday’s $554,500 Kentucky Oaks by a record 20 1/4 lengths at Churchill Downs on May 1, the day before the Kentucky Derby 2009.
Trained by Hal Wiggins, Rachel Alexandra covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.87 and paid $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10. Stone Legacy, under jockey Kent Desormeaux, placed second and returned $11 and $5. Flying Spur with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard came in third and paid $2.80 to show.
The margin of victory is believed to be an Kentucky Oaks record. Available records date to 1916 and the largest previous victory margin was 10 lengths, a feat last achieved by Oaktown Stable’s Lite Light in 1991.
“To tell you the truth I’m happy they didn’t run her,” said winning jockey Calvin Borel when asked if Rachel Alexandra should have been part of the Kentucky Derby field. “I think they did the right thing by running her today, but I do think she would have won it.”
Other horses that raced in Churchill Downs’s Kentucky Oaks in order of finish: Be Fair, Nan, Gabby’s Golden Gal and Tweeter. Justwhistledixie was scratched due to an abscess in her left front foot.
