Quality Road Wins The Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park February 28
Edward Evans’s Quality Road, ridden by jockey John Velazquez, marked his name as one of the probable Kentucky Derby contenders when he became the surprise winner of the $250,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
Trained by James Jerkens, Quality Road covered 1 mile in 1:35.01 and paid $13, $6.40 and $4.60. Theregoesjojo, under jockey Kent Desormeaux, placed second and returned $5.80 and $3.80. Beethoven with jockey Calvin Borel aboard came in third and paid $3.80 to show.
The Fountain of Youth Stakes is one of the 2009 Kentucky Derby prep races scheduled for Saturday, February 28.
Racing for just the second time since breaking his maiden at Aqueduct in November, the Fountain of Youth Stakes win was a bit of a surprise for Quality Road.
“There were some very, very promising horses in this race,” winning jockey John Velazquez said. “And he was good. He handled the pressure the whole way.”
New York-based race horse trainer James Jerkens said he could point Quality Road to the Wood Memorial as his next stop. He also hasn’t ruled out the 2009 Florida Derby, at Gulfstream Park in a month.
“I’m a New York guy, I come from New York, the rest of my stable is there,” Jerkens said. “But the weather back home in the spring is so tricky with track conditions and stuff. At least here, you’ve got a uniform, consistent track. That’s a big thing when you’re getting ready for big races. You don’t want to miss any works if you can help it.”
Other horses that raced in Gulfstream Park‘s Fountain of Youth Stakes in order of finish: Capt. Candyman Can, This Ones for Phil, Bee Cee Cee, Notonthesamepage, Jack Spratt, Taqarub and Break Water Edison. Rocketing Returns and Take the Points were scratched.
