Quality Road Wins 2009 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park March 28

Edward Evans’ Quality Road, ridden by jockey John Velazquez, won the 58th running of the $750,000 Florida Derby on Saturday, March 28, at Gulfstream Park.

SBG Global RacebookThe 2009 Florida Derby is one of the major prep races for the Kentucky Derby 135 where the Florida Derby winner Quality Road could secure a spot in the Kentucky Derby entries list.

Trained by James Jerkens, Quality Road covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.72 and paid $4.40, $2.40 and $2.10. Dunkirk, under jockey Garrett Gomez, placed second and returned $2.40 and $2.10. Theregoesjojo with jockey Kent Desormeaux aboard came in third and paid $2.10 to show.

“It’s a lot of pressure,” said trainer Jimmy Jerkens, who’s taking a horse from his barn into horse racing’s most famed race, the Kentucky Derby, for the first time. “But you know, it’s good to be in that position.”

Other horses that raced in Gulfstream‘s Florida Derby in order of finish: Stately Character, Sincero, Casey’s On Call and Toby the Coal Man. Danger to Society and Europe were scratched
