Quality Road Out of The 2009 Kentucky Derby 135
One of the leading contenders to win the 2009 Kentucky Derby betting is out as Quality Road was scratched on Monday due to a quarter crack. “We couldn’t train him so we decided we couldn’t run him,” trainer Jimmy Jerkens said. “He just isn’t sound enough.”
Quality Road would have been one of the two Kentucky Derby betting favorites even with the quarter crack. Jerkens said he could have run the horse but without training it would have been difficult. “You’re just kidding yourself if you think you can go out there and run in the biggest race in the world and haven’t trained,” Jerkens said. “It’s a shame because he’s so talented.”
Quality Road was favoring his foot on Monday and Jerkens knew that the horse needed to rest. Now Quality Road will be pointed to the Preakness or the Belmont Stakes. “It’s devastating,” Jerkens said. “He’s really sensitive on the quarter. I don’t know if you’d ever get a horse into the Derby (again) with his credentials. We’ll re-patch it but we can’t do it until all the soreness is out of it.”
Quality Road had won three of his four starts including the Florida Derby where he beat Dunkirk who will be one of the Kentucky Derby betting contenders on Saturday.
Dunkirk’s trainer Todd Pletcher gets another horse into the 2009 Kentucky Derby with Quality Road’s scratch as Join in the Dance will now get into the 20 horse Kentucky Derby field.
Join in the Dance was third in the Blue Grass Stakes in his last start. Pletcher’s other horse in the Kentucky Derby is Advice. Pletcher will be trying to break his 0-for-21 streak in the Kentucky Derby and he is happy to have another horse in the Kentucky Derby. “He’s an enthusiastic work horse, so it was good to see him settle and work well today,” Pletcher said about Join in the Dance. “He should be ready now.”

The two Kentucky Derby betting favorites, now that Quality Road is out of the race, figure to be Pioneerof the Nile and I Want Revenge. Neither is going to be an overwhelming favorite though like Big Brown was last year. I Want Revenge is co-owned by IEAH Stables, owners of Big Brown. Iavarone seems just as confident in I Want Revenge as he was last year with Big Brown. “He can win on any surface from anywhere,” Iavarone said.
