Musket Man Probable 2009 Preakness Stakes Contender
Musket Man, the third-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby, will likely run in the Preakness Stakes on May 16 at Pimlico Race Course.
Race horse trainer Derek Ryan said he expects to decide by Wednesday regarding Musket Man being part of the Preakness field, adding his colt will not run in the Belmont Stakes 2009.
Ryan said he likes the 1 3/16-mile distance for the May 16 Preakness Stakes 2009, 1/16-miles shorter than the first leg of the Triple Crown.
“It’s shortening up a little bit and I want to run him in the Haskell,” race horse trainer Derek Ryan said before a press conference to trumpet this weekend’s opening of Monmouth Park, the site of the $1 million Haskell Invitational on August 2.
Musket Man was edged for second in the Kentucky Derby by Pioneerof the Nile. The two finished almost 7 lengths behind Mine That Bird, who won the Kentucky Derby at odds of 50-1.
The Preakness Stakes is limited to 14 Preakness starters.
