Mine That Bird Wins The 2009 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs May 2
Double Eagle Ranch and Bueno Suerte Equine’s 50-1 longshot Mine That Bird, ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, won Saturday’s 135th running of the $2,177,200 Kentucky Derby 2009 by 6 1/2 lengths at Churchill Downs on May 2.
Trained by Bennie Wolley Jr., Mine That Bird covered 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.66 and paid $103.20, $54 and $25.80. Pioneerof the Nile, under jockey Garrett Gomez, placed second and returned $8.40 and $6.40. Musket Man with jockey Eibar Coa aboard came in third and paid $12 to show.
Mine That Bird, who came into Derby 135 off a fourth-place finish in the Sunland Park Derby on March 29 at New Mexico’s Sunland Park, rallied from last in the Kentucky Derby field of 19 to win the Kentucky Derby by 6 3/4 lengths, the largest margin of victory since eventual Triple Crown winner Assault won the Kentucky Derby by 8 lengths in 1946.
Jockey Calvin Borel earned his second Kentucky Derby victory after taking the 2007 Kentucky Derby with Street Sense. Calvin Borel had won Friday’s $500,000 Kentucky Oaks, the Kentucky Derby’s sister race, aboard heavily favored Rachel Alexandra.
Borel became the seventh rider to achieve the Kentucky Oaks-Derby sweep in the same year Jerry Bailey did it in 1993 aboard Dispute and Sea Hero, respectively.
The Kentucky Derby victory was worth $1,417,200 and increased Mine That Bird’s career bankroll to $1,791,581 with 5 wins in 9 starts.
