Magical Fantasy Wins The John C. Mabee Stakes at Del Mar August 16

David Bienstock, Paul Mandabach and Charles Winner’s Magical Fantasy, ridden by jockey Alex Solis, won the $350,000 John C. Mabee Stakes at Del Mar on Sunday, August 16.

SBG Global RacebookTrained by Patrick Gallagher, Magical Fantasy covered 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:47.17 and paid $6.40, $4.20 and $2.80. Gotta Have Her, under jockey Tyler Baze, placed second and returned $7.20 and $4.60;. Patricia’s Gem with jockey Victor Espinoza aboard came in third and paid $3.80 to show.

John C. Mabee Stakes winner Magical Fantasy earned $210,000 for the victory and a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf field to be held at Santa Anita Park on November as part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win & You’re In” program.

Magical Fantasy sat seventh in the John C. Mabee Stakes field of 9 for most of the race, moved up to fifth at the top of the stretch and rallied four-wide to beat Gotta Have Her by a length gaining her fifth win in 16 starts.

“She beat a lot of nice fillies,” race horse trainer Patrick Gallagher said. “She had to run to catch them.”

Other horses that raced in Del Mar’s John C. Mabee Stakes in order of finish: Visit, Charming Legacy, Meydan Princess, Bel Air Sizzle, Tuscan Evening and Briecat. Lethal Heat was scratched.
