Macho Again Wins Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs June 13

Macho Again beat Asiatic Boy by 1 length to give jockey Robby Albarado his third consecutive victory in the $600,000 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs on Saturday, June 13.

SBG Global RacebookJockey Robby Albarado, who won the race in 2008 with two-time horse of the year Curlin and in 2007 with Flashy Bull, guided the 4-year-old son of Macho Uno in the colt’s signature move from last to first.

Macho Again began picking up horses on the far turn of the 1 1/8-mile Stephen Foster Handicap, and Albarado guided him to the lead on the outside as 6-5 favorite Einstein, bidding to become the first horse in history to win on dirt, turf and synthetic surfaces, could not find running room behind a wall of tiring horses.

“The race set up great for us today,” said jockey Robby Albarado, who won five of 11 races on the afternoon card. “We had an outside trip and got a clear run. It’s not by design that I wanted to go that wide, but I just put him in a path where he can run around horses. He prevailed to be the best today.”

Coming off a disappointing sixth-place finish in the May 1 Alysheba Stakes, Macho Again got his first Grade 1 victory in the Stephen Foster Handicap for trainer Dallas Stewart in 1:49.75.

Macho Again paid $17.40, $6.20, and $3.60 at odds of 7-1. Asiatic Boy and jockey Alan Garcia returned $7 and $3.80 to place, while Einstein and jockey Julien Leparoux returned $2.10 to show.

Stewart said the Aug. 8 Whitney Handicap at Saratoga would be the next goal for Macho Again, who ran the Travers Stakes last season and was second to Big Brown in the Preakness.
