Louisiana Derby Field at Fair Grounds March 14

A field of 10 race horses headed by Friesan Fire, one of the leading Kentucky Derby contenders, were entered in the $600,000 Louisiana Derby (gr. II) at Fair Grounds Race Course.

All carrying 122 pounds, Fair Grounds‘ Louisiana Derby field of race horses with jockeys and morning line odds:

  1. Free Country ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux with morning line odds of 12-1
  2. Soul Warrior ridden by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, 20-1
  3. Patena ridden by jockey Robby Albarado, 7-2
  4. Terrain ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux, 10-1
  5. Flying Pegasus ridden by jockey John Velazquez, 8-1
  6. Giant Oak ridden by jockey James Graham, 4-1
  7. Uno Mas ridden by jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., 12-1
  8. Papa Clem ridden by jockey Rafael Bejarano, 8-1
  9. Friesan Fire ridden by jockey Gabriel Saez, 5-2
  10. Nowhere to Hide ridden by jockey Corey Lanerie, 15-1

Vinery Stables and Fox Hill Farms’ Friesan Fire, winner of the Kentucky Derby prep races: Lecomte Stakes and Risen Star Stakes, can become the first horse in 16 years to sweep the Louisiana Derby series. Friesan Fire breezed a bullet 5 furlongs in 58.20 Monday morning at Fair Grounds under jockey Gabriel Saez for race horse trainer Larry Jones.

Kentucky-bred Friesan Fire drew post No. 9 and has been installed as the 5-2 morning line choice in the Louisiana Derby.

Early second horse betting choice is IEAH Stables et al’s Patena, pegged at 7-2. Patena ran second, beaten a length and a half by Friesan Fire in the Lecomte Stakes, his only start this year. The Lecomte was run before Patena was sold and transferred to the barn of trainer Richard Dutrow Jr., who saddled Big Brown to win last spring’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

Patena will break from post position 3 and will be ridden by jockey Robby Albarado this Saturday.

The Louisiana Derby is the 9th race in Fair Grounds’ March 14 horse racing program. Louisiana Derby post time is 4:45 pm.
