Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes Field at Kempton Park March 18

A full field of 14 European-trained Kentucky Derby hopefuls will race in the inaugural running of the £80000 Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes at Kempton Park Wednesday, March 18.

In a linkup by Churchill Downs and British horse racing, the Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes offers to the winner a spot in the 2009 Kentucky Derby entries list which is limited to a field of 20. The Kentucky Derby 135 will be run on May 2.

Raced at 1 1/8 miles, Kempton Park’s Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes field of race horses with jockeys:

  7. Mafaaz ridden by jockey R. Hills

  10. Shampagne ridden by jockey Martin Dwyer
  11. Sohcahtoa ridden by jockey Ryan Moore
  12. Spring Of Fame ridden by jockey Chris Catlin

Included in the Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes entries is Akhenaten, son of English Derby winner High Chaparral.

Race horse trainer John Gosden, who trained in the U.S. for many years and had 2 Breeders Cup winners last year, has 2 Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes entries: Close Alliance and Mafaaz.

Close Alliance is owned by the Aga Khan and won its only race as a 2-year-old. Mafaaz won 1 of its 2 starts and finished fifth at Newmarket behind Donativum, who went on to win the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf.
