Jockey Rene Douglas Likely Not To Walk Again After Accident At Arlington Park

Jockey Rene Douglas may be paralyzed after being thrown from his mount during a race at Arlington Park, his agent Dennis Cooper said.

SBG Global RacebookDennis Cooper said jockey Rene Douglas spent 7 hours in surgery on Sunday at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital and afterward doctors told him his client could not feel his lower limbs. Cooper said doctors won’t know Douglas’ status for certain until swelling reduces in about two weeks.

“They said he might not walk again … he’ll probably have use of his upper body, but they gave it to me straight that he’s not likely to walk,” Cooper told Bloodhorse.com.

Rene Douglas was aboard Born to Be during Saturday’s Arlington Matron Handicap May 23 when the race horse clipped hooves with another horse and fell at the top of the stretch. Born to Be flipped and tossed jockey Rene Douglas over her head, then landed on him.

Jockey Jamie Theriot, the other horse’s jockey, has been suspended for 30 days, according to stewards at Arlington Park. Theriot was riding Sky Mom, who was disqualified and placed last in the race for causing interference in the stretch.

Jockey Rene Douglas has nearly 3,600 North American victories, including the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies with Dreaming of Anna and the Belmont Stakes 1996 on Editor’s Note. His mounts have earned more than $102 million through Saturday.

Wow, this is just a real tragedy. While Douglas may not be a household name, he’s surely well known in the Horse Racing community. We wish him the best in a speedy recovery.

My heart goes out to him and his family. I took my granddaughters to their first races 2 weeks ago. They chose him and Popsicle Toes as their favorite and have good video of him winning and later dismounting in the Winner’s Circle. Memorable.
We’re hoping for an eventual recovery to a high quality of life.
