Indian Blessing Wins The Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont Park September 26
Patti and Hal Earnhardt’s Indian Blessing, ridden by jockey John Velazquez, won the $156,500 Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont Park on Saturday, September 26.
Trained by Bob Baffert, Indian Blessing covered 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.29 and paid $4.80, $2.70 and $2.20. Sara Louise, under jockey Edgar Prado, placed second and returned $2.90 and $2.20. Sky Haven with jockey Alan Garcia aboard came in third and paid $4.20 to show.
As a Breeders’ Cup 2009 Challenge, Gallant Bloom Handicap winner Indian Blessing gets a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on November 6 at Santa Anita.
“She put up a really good fight today,” said winning jockey John Velazquez. “She didn’t leave [the gate] all that well, and I had to use her a little bit to get position. I let her be comfortable, and wait. When the hole opened up, I took the spot, and went on with her. I tell you, [Sara Louise] was a brave one, too. The more I asked my filly, the more the other one kept coming back. It was a good effort for both fillies.”
Other horses that raced in Belmont Park’s Gallant Bloom Handicap in order of finish: Thunders Dove, P. S. U. Grad and Any Limit. American Queen was scratched.
