Greg Melikov’s Horses to Watch

Horses worth watching, a list of runners compiled by handicapper/turf writer Greg Melikov that should improve significantly or do well next time out, won twice, ran second twice and finished third four times since March 16. These thoroughbreds are worth considering when developing your horse betting strategy.

Arlington Park

Online Horse BettingJilly From Philly: Broke seventh and last, trailed by more than six lengths after a half-mile, angled out for the drive, closed with a rush from fifth in stretch, made up 2 1/2 lengths and finished second beaten a head at six furlongs on May 3; ran final quarter in 24 seconds.

Belmont Park

Refinery Fire: Broke next to last from outside post 9, steadied in tight quarters, raced 10 lengths behind in eighth after a half-mile, circled four wide for the drive, rallied from fifth in stretch to make up 4 1/2 lengths and finished second beaten a half-length at 1 1/16 miles on the turf May 1.

Calder Race Course

Peruano Smoke: Raced 2 1/2 lengths behind in third after a half-mile, rallied in stretch to make up 1 1/2 lengths and finished second beaten a half-length at a mile on May 8.

Starship Valor: Bumped hard with rival at break, raced fifth early, dropped to sixth more than three lengths behind after a half-mile, lost a couple of lengths entering stretch, rallied from fifth to make up more than 3 3/4 lengths and finished second by 2 1/2 lengths at six furlongs on April 24.

Charles Town

Farleyshelonwheels: Raced more than seven lengths behind in fifth after a half-mile, swung wide in upper stretch, rallied from fourth to make up nearly 4 1/2 lengths and finished second beaten a neck at seven furlongs on March 18 at Laurel Park; ran final three furlongs in 36 1/5. (Raced more than 3 1/2 lengths behind in seventh after a half-mile, advanced very wide to sixth in stretch and finished strongly to gain third by three-quarters of a length at seven furlongs on April 5.)

Churchill Downs

Cannonball: Bumped at break, recovered quickly, raced more than 2 1/2 lengths behind in fourth after three-eighths of a mile, lost ground going wider in stretch, made up three lengths and finished second beaten a neck at five furlongs on a good turf course May 1.

Success Success: Raced more than seven lengths behind in sixth after a half-mile, angled out for drive, closed well in stretch to make up nearly two lengths and finished third beaten a nose and a neck at seven furlongs on April 26; ran final three furlongs in 36 4/5.

Headache: Raced more than five lengths behind in fifth after a half-mile, dropped to sixth looking for room in mid-stretch, finished well making up more than 2 3/4 lengths and ran second beaten 1 1/4 lengths at 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf April 1; ran final 2 1/2 furlongs in 28 seconds at Santa Anita.

Delaware Park

Gray Might: Broke seventh and last, raced more than 3 1/2 lengths behind in fifth after a half-mile, rallied from third in stretch to make up 2 3/4 lengths and gained second by 4 1/4 lengths at six furlongs on a sealed sloppy surface May 4.

Evangeline Downs

Classic Idle: Broke 13th and last, zipped to second early, lost ground to fourth three lengths behind after a half-mile, moved outside for the drive losing more ground, rallied in stretch to make up nearly four lengths and finished second beaten a neck at seven furlongs on May 6.

Nine Free: Raced four lengths behind in fifth after three-eighths of a mile, steadied leaving the turn, recovered to rally from fourth making up nearly four lengths and finished second beaten a neck at five furlongs on April 24.

Hollywood Park

Welkin: Raced 4 1/2 lengths behind in sixth after three-eighths of a mile, rallied from fifth in stretch, split rivals to make up more than 2 1/2 lengths and finished second beaten a nose at 1 1/16 miles on the turf May 6; ran final 2 1/2 furlongs in 29 4/5.

Reality Uptown: Dueled with winner from the start and finished second beaten a head at 4 1/2 furlongs on April 22. (Tracked pace from start, raced 1 1/2 lengths behind in second after a half-mile, but couldn’t catch winner while easily securing place by 3 1/4 lengths by 3 1/4 lengths at 4 1/2 furlongs on May 7.)

Online Horse BettingJ P Jammer: Raced more than 2 1/2 lengths behind in fourth after a half-mile, dropped to fifth after six furlongs, awaited room entering the lane, blocked by rivals in upper stretch, shifted out dropping to sixth, rallied past eighth pole to make up 1 3/4 lengths and finished second beaten 1 1/4 lengths at 1 1/16 miles on March 19 at Santa Anita. Our Story: Raced more than six lengths behind in fifth after a half-mile, swung out in fourth at top of the stretch, closed fast to make up 4 1/2 lengths and finished second beaten a half-length at seven furlongs on a muddy surface May 3.

Belfast: Broke slowly 10th and last, trailed by more than 13 1/2 lengths after a half-mile, swung five wide into the stretch, rallied from fourth to make up more than two lengths and finished second beaten a length at 1 1/16 miles on the turf April 23.

Monmouth Park

Stones Throw: Pressed pace a head back in second after a half-mile, gained lead by a head after six furlongs, dueled gamely rest of way, bumped with winner in mid-stretch and finished second beaten a head at a mile and 70 yards on a sealed muddy surface on April 20 at Philadelphia Park. (Pressed pace a half-length behind in second after a half-mile, moved to front on far turn, led by a head in stretch, battled gamely, but lost by 1 1/2 lengths at a mile on May 9.)

Penn National

Stay Safe: Went right to the lead just off rail, led by two lengths after a half-mile, increased margin to five lengths in stretch and drew off in handy fashion to win by eight lengths going 1:10 3/5 for six furlongs on Feb. 7 at Philadelphia Park. (Raced 1 1/2 lengths behind on third after a half-mile, grabbed lead in mid-stretch and drew off to win by 2 1/4 lengths ridden out at a mile and 70 yards on March 16 at Philadelphia Park.)

Philadelphia Park

Mr. Congeniality: Raced a length behind in third after a half-mile, advanced on the turn to lead in stretch by four lengths and steadily increased margin under mild handling to win by 10 1/2 lengths at seven furlongs on May 5; cruised final three furlongs in 37 4/5.

SBG Global RacebookTrue Values: Raced 1 1/2 lengths behind in third after a half-mile, moved to second in stretch and held that position by 2 1/4 lengths at six furlongs on March 10. (Tracked pace in third early, slipped through inside of turn to gain lead entering stretch, increased margin to three lengths and prevailed by three-quarters of a length at six furlongs on April 7.)

Conquer the Fear: Steadied near half-mile marker, raced more than two lengths behind in fifth after four furlongs, steadied again near end of backstretch losing a couple of lengths, went outside to find room for the drive, closed fast to make up nearly four lengths in stretch and finished second beaten a head at 6 1/2 furlongs on March 31.

Pimlico

Patch of Fire: Raced more than 7 1/2 lengths behind in sixth after a half-mile, saved ground, advanced to fourth in stretch, rallied to make up 3 1/2 lengths and finished second beaten a length at six furlongs on May 2; ran final quarter in 24 3/5.

Our Sue: Bumped, steadied and shuffled back to eighth shortly after start, raced seventh more than 9 1/2 lengths behind after a half-mile, bumped with second-placed finisher in mid-stretch and lost the place by a neck at six furlongs on April 24.

Tampa Bay Downs

Perf: Stalked pace in fourth two heads and 1 1/2 lengths behind after a half-mile, bumped and pushed out into rival dropping to sixth after six furlongs, pushed out two more times by same rival in stretch, rallied from fifth to make up nearly two lengths and finished third by a head at a mile on the turf April 1; advanced to second when runner-up was disqualified to third for interference in stretch. (Raced 5 1/2 lengths behind in eighth after a half-mile, lost ground going wide into stretch and rallied from sixth to finish third at 1 1/16 miles on the turf April 25.)

Mike’s Trippin: Chased pace in second four lengths behind after a half-mile, couldn’t catch winner, but held position by a length at six furlongs on March 31. (Pressed pace between rivals in second a head behind after a half-mile, dueled through most of the stretch and weakened a bit to finish third beaten a nose and three-quarters of a length at 6 1/2 furlongs on April 21.)
