General Quarters Wins Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland April 11
Thomas McCarthy’s General Quarters, ridden by jockey Eibar Coa, won the $750,000 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland and a place in the Kentucky Derby entries list.
The Blue Grass Stakes is one of the 2009 Kentucky Derby prep races scheduled for Saturday, April 11. With the Blue Grass Stakes win, General Quarters increased his career earnings to $641,735 securing his spot in the Kentucky Derby field.
Eighth choice in the Blue Grass Stakes field of 11 at 14-1, General Quarters covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.26 and paid $30.60, $11 and $7. Hold Me Back, under jockey Kent Desormeaux, placed second and returned $4.20 and $3. Massone with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard came in third and paid $7.20 to show.
“He trained like a champion all week, and after that breeze last week (:58.20 for five furlongs) I knew I had him right where I wanted him,” said Thomas McCarthy of the Sky Mesa colt. “I think he exhibited the tenacity to go on to the (Kentucky) Derby.”
Other horses that raced in Keeneland’s Blue Grass Stakes in order of finish: Terrain, Join in the Dance, Loch Dubh, Charitable Man, Mafaaz, Theregoesjojo, Patena and Cliffy’s Future.
