Godolphin Racing’s Gayego, ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, won Sunday’s $300,000 Ancient Title Stakes by a length at Santa Anita Park October 11.
As a Breeders’ Cup 2009 “Win & You’re In” race, the Ancient Title Stakes winner gets a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint entries on November 7.
Trained by Saeed bin Suroor, Gayego covered 6 furlongs in 1:08.28 and paid $4.40, $3.20 and $2.80. Crown of Thorns, under jockey Victor Espinoza, placed second and returned $6.20 and $5.40. Delta Storm with jockey Joel Rosario aboard came in third and paid $8.60 to show.
Gayego earned $180,000 for his Ancient Title Stakes win increasing his horse racing career winnings to more than $1.2 million, with 7 wins in 13 starts.
