Friesan Fire Wins Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds January 10
Vinery Stables and Fox Hill Farm’s Kentucky Derby hopeful Friesan Fire, ridden by jockey Gabriel Saez, wins the $100,000 LeComte Stakes (gr. III), the first of the 2009 Kentucky Derby prep races at Fair Grounds on Saturday, January 10.
Trained by Larry Jones, Friesan Fire covered a mile in 1:37.67, less than a tenth of a second off the stakes record, and paid $6.80, $4.20 and $3.20. Patena, under jockey Robby Albarado, placed second and returned $4.80 and $3.40. Au Moon with jockey Julien Leparoux aboard came in third and paid $4 to show.
The bay colt of A.P. Indy, Friesan Fire, almost doubled his career earnings to $123,265 with his second win from 5 lifetime starts.
“He did well,” said race horse trainer Larry Jones, who won the Lecomte for the second time in three years. “He broke well and got to relax between horses. (Saez) took him out and he finished up the race.”
Other horses that raced in Fair Grounds’s LeComte Stakes in order of finish: Uno Mas, Big Push, Indygo Mountain, Citizen and Dynamic Force. Professor Z was scratched from the Lecomte.
