Filly Rachel Alexandra Wins The Preakness Stakes 2009 at Pimlico Race Course
Stonestreet Stables and Harold McCormick’s filly Rachel Alexandra, ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, won Saturday’s 134th running of the $1-million Preakness Stakes 2009, second jewel of the Triple Crown, at Pimlico Race Course May 16.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Rachel Alexandra covered 1 3/16 miles in 1:55.08 and paid $5.60, $4.60 and $3.60. Mine That Bird, under jockey Mike Smith, placed second and returned $6.60 and $4.80. Musket Man with jockey Eibar Coa aboard came in third and paid $5 to show.
The tall bay filly Rachel Alexandra became the fifth filly to win the Preakness. Rachel Alexandra pushed her head to the fore and never relinquished the lead, opening up by 4 lengths at the furlong pole before coming under a late assault from Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Musket Man.
“I’m thrilled to death with the race my little horse ran. Everything was going according to Hoyle, until the turn when he was fanned a little wide. I thought we had a chance at the eighth-pole. But you have to give that filly credit. She’s a great one,” Mine That Bird race horse trainer Chip Woolley said. “The Belmont is next for us.”
Rachel Alexandra’s race horse trainer, Steve Asmussen, said he’ll wait a few days before making a decision in making Rachel Alexandra one of the Belmont Stakes contenders.
“I knew (Mine that Bird) was coming. It’s going to take a racehorse to beat her,” said Preakness winning jockey Calvin Borel. “She’s the greatest racehorse I’ve been on in my life.”
