Eskendereya Wins The Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont Park October 4
Zayat Stables’ Eskendereya, ridden by jockey Javier Castellano, won Sunday’s $154,500 Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont Park October 4 and qualified for a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf entries list on November 6 at Santa Anita as part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, Eskendereya covered 1 mile in 1:37.85 and paid $7.20, $2.90 and $2.20. Western Flyer, under jockey Alan Garcia, placed second and returned $3.40 and $2.30. Chairman Now with jockey Ramon Dominguez aboard came in third and paid $2.40 to show.
“It was a very good effort and I was particularly pleased with the way he finished up and the way he galloped out,” race horse trainer Todd Pletcher said. “We’ll talk to the owners about his next start; we have a lot of options.”
Other horses that raced in Zayat Stables’s Pilgrim Stakes in order of finish: Bricklayer and Dean’s Kitten. Billions Boy, Interactif, Mr. Vegas, Paddy O’Prado and Shrimp Dancer were scratched.
